Abstract

1,117,883. Refrigerating. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 10 June, 1965 [13 June, 1964; 22 July, 1964], No. 24589/65. Heading F4H. [Also in Division F1] In a thermodynamic reciprocating engine comprising at least one cylinder containing a piston 92 and a displacer 93 and having a pair of parallel crank-shafts 107 which are arranged to rotate in opposite directions and the centre lines of which are located symmetrically on opposite sides of the common centre line of the piston and displacer and in a plane at right angles to this centre line, the two crank shafts are coupled by a worm 108 or worm wheel fixed on each crank shaft and co-operating with a worm wheel 109 or worm respectively fixed on a third shaft 110 which crosses the crank-shafts and which establishes a connection between the engine and a device 113, 112 which is driven by or drives the engine. The invention is described as applied to hot gas engines but is stated to be applicable to cold gas refrigerators. The engine may comprise at least two pairs of parallel crank-shafts, the pairs being arranged in parallel planes spaced apart by a small distance so that the crank-shafts of one pair cross those of the other pair. Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) relate to an engine having eight cylinders arranged around two concentric output shafts. Two four cylinder engines may drive a common output shaft. The output shaft may be arranged at an oblique angle to the plane containing the centre lines of the cylinders.
