Abstract
1,106,895. Making electric cables. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. 22 Oct., 1965 [5 Nov., 1964], No. 45115/64. Heading H1A. Air which leaks from the open end at left into the space between the first and second pairs of sealing O-rings 6 on plug 3 is exhausted from ring-slot 12 through line 9 so that a vacuum may be preserved around dried cable core 1 in sheath 2 until the cable is filled with oil after sheathing is complete. Line 9 leads to a pump and is fastened to curved metal shield 7, which is shaped to fit the sheath 2, the end of the line, protruding through it and an aperture in the sheath into ring slot 12. Packing 8 ensures a tight seal and packing 11 protects the soft metal sheath when bands 10 are tightened by clamps to force the shield against the sheath. Optionally line 9 may have a solid tip and a bore leading to a side opening beside the tip, and be slidable in shield 7 so as to make its own aperture in the sheath.
