A measuring device for determining irregularities in the running surface of a railway rail comprises a dial gauge 6 slidably mounted on a guide rail 4 which is fixed to the rail at one end by an eccentric clamping device 2, and at the other end by a spring lever (not shown), so that one guide rail lies parallel to the edge of the rail and at a predetermined distance therefrom.
