A measuring head for a gauge of the movable plunger type has a work-contacting roller 1 having conical recesses engaged by ball bearings 3, 2. Ball 3 is spring-pressed against roller 1 by a strip 6, the other ball bearing against the inclined surface 9 of a resiliently mounted plunger 8. Up-anddown movement of the roller 1 varies the separation of the ball bearings by the wedge action of the conical recesses, and this in turn causes up-anddown movement of the plunger 8 which is registered by an indicator (not shown).
