742,910. Gauging gear-teeth. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D. Oct. 29, 1954 [Nov. 11, 1953], No. 31200/53. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for testing the tooth profile of an involute gear of the kind comprising a straightedge c, Fig. 2, and a gauging member k aligned therewith is characterized in that a column a carrying the straight-edge c and the gauge k is slidable on guides on a part b located on a gear cutting or finishing machine, e.g. by means of the bracket shown in Fig. 2a so as to be pivotal about an axis parallel to that of the gear being tested into a position in which the straight-edge makes frictional driving contact with a base-disc y associated with the gear whilst the latter is still in position on the machine. As shown the gauge k and its associated indicating or recording mechanism i is mounted on a sub-carriage e traversable in a direction parallel to the gear axis upon guides h mounted on the column a. As shown, the straight edge is maintained in frictional contact with the base-disc by virtue of the weight of the apparatus, but where the apparatus is used to test a gear whose axis is vertical a tension wire or rod may be provided to maintain this frictional contact.
