[Class 106 (ii)] A machine for testing helical curves is characterised in that driving means includes a rotatable element adapted to cause and to synchronise rotation of the test-piece and linear displacement of a carriage carrying a dial gauge or the like, the feeler of which is in engagement with the surface of the test-piece. The test-piece 11 is rotatably mounted between head and tail stocks (not shown) and the measuring instrument 13, having a feeler 14 to engage a tooth of the test-piece, is adjustably mounted on a measuring carriage 12 which is supported on the main structure (not shown) for movement in a direction parallel to the axis of the test-piece. The carriage may be moved by means of a wheel 15 which rotates a shaft 16, an offset ratio bar 22 on the shaft engaging a pin 23 on the carriage. The extent of movement of the carriage for a given rotation of the shaft 16 may be set, according to the angle of the teeth on the test-piece, by adjusting the pin 23 vertically on the carriage by means of a screw and hand crank (not shown) and the pin is maintained in contact with the ratio bar by means of a weight 29 connected to the carriage. The shaft 16 also carries a second ratio bar 31 which engages a similarly adjustable pin 32 and so imparts vertical movement to a drive slide 33, the weight of which maintains the pin and arm in contact. The drive slide is secured, by means of clamps 45, 51, controlled by a knob 55, to either portion of a steel tape 34 and so imparts rotary movement to a disc 35 fast on a spindle carrying the test-piece. The tape is secured to the disc 35, and to an idler mounted on a spring-located arm 37, by means of studs. The test-piece is thus rotated as the measuring instrument is moved linearly so that the latter will indicate any variations from true form of the helical teeth of the testpiece. The feeler 14 may control recording means as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,305,264.
