681,719. Gauging toothed gears. MAHR, C. Nov. 3, 1949 [Dec. 15, 1948], No. 28222/49. Class 106 (ii). A gear - testing machine operating in accordance with the single - flank meshing method and comprising a shaft to which is fixed a master gear, and two concentric shafts, to one of which is fixed the gear piece to be tested and which is placed in mesh with the master gear, friction discs being fixed to the other of said concentric shafts and to the master gear shaft, and having a stationary recording device, and differentially acting means carried by the concentric shafts for transmitting any variation in the angular velocity of said shafts to the recording device, in which the difference in angular velocity of the two concentric shafts is transmitted to the recording device by means of an axially displaceable thrust element arranged coaxially with the said shafts is characterized in that the element has complete freedom of movement except for engagement at its ends with lever members, one of which moves with any variation in velocity and the other is connected to the recording device. Apparatus for testing gears by the single flank meshing method comprises a standard gear 3 fixed on a shaft 2 driven through worm-wheel 8 and worm 7 on a shaft 6 by an electric motor 4. A gear 9 to be tested is fixed to a shaft 10 and meshes with the gear 3 while a friction disc 13 on the shaft 2 co-operates with a friction disc 12 on a hollow shaft 11 coaxial with the shaft 10 so that any variations in angular velocity between the shafts 10, 11 indicate irregularities in the gear under test which may be recorded on a drum 14 driven by the electric motor 4 by a stylus 19 rotatably mounted in the framework. Relative movement between the shafts 10, 11 is transmitted to the stylus 19 through an arm 22 on the shaft 10 working in an aperture in the shaft 11 and engaging a bell-crank lever 25 pivoted on a flange of the shaft 11, the lever 25 engages a lever 26 which engages a member 24 coaxial with the shafts 10, 11 and transmits movement to a bell-crank lever 27 pivoted in the framework and the lever 27 moves a member 28 engaging an arm 29 on a spindle 30 carrying the stylus. To accommodate gears of different sizes the shaft 2 is mounted in a carriage slidable by screw means 32 and friction discs of suitable size replace discs 12, 13.
