Abstract
487,886. Strain measuring gauges. JOHN, F. Jan. 4, 1937, No. 170. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a particular construction of the type of device for measuring the deformation of a machine frame under load in which an indicating instrument is secured at one point to the frame, the indication being controlled by a slidable member having a lost-motion connection to another point of the frame so that the slidable member operates the indicator in a one-way-movement to give maximum deformation. Located in a casing 2 and attached to the frame 1 is an indicating instrument having a pointer 3 and spring feeler 4 engaging a wedge-shaped slider 10. A rod 7 secured at 8 to the frame is connected to the member 10 by a pin-and-slot connection 16, 17. A brake shoe 15 is pressed against the wedge 10 by a spring 13. When the frame stretches, the wedge 10 is moved against the frictional resistance of the brake shoe and held in the new position, the movement being indicated by the pointer 3. In a modification, the casing is horizontal and the wedge is acted upon by a tension spring, the rod 7 which is spring urged, being connected to the brake block at the lower end, and to the frame by a lost motion connection at the point 8. In a variation of this form a second indicating wedge is arranged at approximately right-angles to the first. Further forms involve the use, instead of the indicating instrument with a feeler, of an eccentrically mounted graduated disc which bears against a spring brake block having a pin-and-slot connection to the rod 7 or against the lower end of the rod itself, which is spring pressed.
