Abstract

476,842. Dynamometers. SOC. ANON. DES HAUTS-FOURNEAUX DE LA CHIERS. Dec. 4, 1936, No. 33363. Convention date, April 17. [Class 106 (ii)] The work done by an impact member is obtained by measuring the work done by an inertia member carried by the impact member and having the same speed as that member before impact, against the influence of a calibrated spring which it engages throughout its movement. The impact member M has screwed into it a tube 1 housing a spring 4 on which rests the inertia member m guided by a pin 3 engaging in a longitudinal slot 2 in the walls of the tube. Heel pieces 5 are welded to the tube at each side of the slot 2 in which slots are provided through which is passed a sheet of thick paper which is engaged by a tracer 9 carried by the member m and pressed out from it by a light spring 10. The tube is closed at the top by a screw cap 11. The impact member M is dropped from a predetermined height, say to test a rail supported at each end. On impact, the member M is arrested but the member m continues and compresses the spring by an amount traced on the paper. The work absorbed by the rail is shown to have a parabolic relation with the distance the spring has been compressed.
