[Class 106 (ii)] The alignment of spaced holes in an element such as a connecting-rod 27 is tested in an apparatus comprising a base 10 on which is a split clamping-member 11 for a mandrel 12 which fits into one hole in the rod 27, and two spaced vertical pillars 30 on which is a carriage 32 having two spaced horizontal guides 38 for a second carriage 47 carrying a pair of housings 54 each having a pair of dial indicators. The second hole 28 in the rod 27 is fitted with a long pin adapted to be contacted simultaneously by the two spaced horizontal feelers 72, and then by the two vertical feelers 73 of the two dial gauges. The carriages 32 and 47 are adjustable vertically and horizontally, respectively, by screw-means. The two housings 54 are adjustably mounted on a non-circular rod 48 the longitudinal axis of which can be moved into or out of alignment with that of the mandrel 12 by a pair of eccentrics mounted in the carriage 47. Each housing 54 includes an ordinary dial indicator, the feeler rod of which engages one of three levers on a short horizontal shaft, the other two levers engaging respectively the two feelers 72, 73. Ball contacts are arranged on each lever, and each feeler has an adjustable end-piece. A spring-pressed bar inside the mandrel 12 has a slotted inclined slide therein engaged by a claw member adapted to project through a slot in the mandrel. The bar is movable along the inside of the mandrel by a screw to force the claw member outwardly of the mandrel to grip inside the hole in the rod 27. Two further claw members may be rigidly secured to the bar to project through slots in the mandrel for form a threepoint contact inside the hole in the rod 27.
