Abstract
601,100. Linear-dimension gauges. TAYLOR, L. April 1, 1946, No. 9958. [Class 106 (ii)] A gauge of the type described in Specification 552,662 comprising a slide 17, a headstock 28 and a tailstock 19 mounted thereon and carrying complementary work engaging members 25, means for adjusting the position of the tailstock on the slide, and spring means for urging the headstock along the slide, and a gauge 40 to indicate movement of the headstock, has the spring means adapted to provide resistance to movement in either direction whereby one instrument can be used for either external or internal measurement. A crosshead 18 secured to the slide is supported by a cradle frame 13 on a pedestal 10. A further cross-head 36 is fixed to the end of the rod 17. A platform 37 to which is fixed the work engaging member 25 slides over the cross-head 18 and is attached to the headstock 28. Within the headstock is a spring assembly comprising a central sliding plunger 29 movable laterally by a pin 30 slidable in a double bayonet slot 31. In the ends of the plunger are springs 32, 33 with end members 34, 35. Depending from the headstock 28 is a dial gauge 40 having a plunger 42 which contacts an adjustable screw 43 on the fixed crosshead 36. For internal measurements the pin 30 is set in the position shown in Fig. 1 compressing the spring 32 and moving the headstock into abutment with the cross-head 36. The tail stock is adjusted so that the dial gauge may be set to zero with a master gauge in position. Readings may then be taken to correspond to movements of the headstock away from the cross-head 36. Similarly for external measurements the pin is placed in the opposite end of the slot thus compressing the spring 33 and moving the headstock into abutment with the crosshead 18. For varying sizes of workpieces the work contact members 25 may be placed in alternative tapped holes (not shown).
