Abstract

1,065,245. Fuel injection systems. J.L. GRATZMULLER. Dec.18, 1963 [Dec. 20, 1962], No.49903/63. Heading F1B. Fuel is supplied to an accumulator space 4, the outlet passage 12 of which leading to the injector is controlled by a valve 28 held closed by fuel pressure supplied to chamber 30, release of the fuel pressure permitting valve 28 to rise and the fuel to be injected. The chamber 4 has a spring-loaded accumulator piston 6, fuel under pressure being delivered through non-return valves 58, 26, to the spaces 4, 30 prior to injection and the pressure in chamber 30 being released for injection by a differential pressure operated valve 60B when pump piston 52 moves down. The stroke of piston 6 may be limited by an adjustable stop. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the amount of fuel stored in chamber 4a on each stroke is limited by a valve (70'), carried by the accumulator piston (6'), which is lifted by an adjustable stop (68) to limit the piston travel. In Fig. 4 (not shown) which is a practical embodiment of Fig.3, the valve piston (28"), non-return valve (26") and accumulator piston (6") are arranged coaxially. Fuel supplied through passage (100) acts on piston (28") to hold the injection valve (14") closed and passes through valve (26") to the accumulator space (4") and lifts piston (6") by an amount governed by adjustable stop (72b) co-operating with a relief valve (70") in the piston. When the fuel pressure in passage (100) is released, the valve (14") opens and the piston (6") descends to force the fuel in space (4") through passage (88) to the injection orifices until the piston (6") contacts the valve stem (86) and closes the injection valve (14").
