Abstract
1,060,384. Sealing closures. F. M. HAGMANN, H. B. GRAHAM, and R. B. MORRIS. Feb. 25, 1964, No. 7775/64. Heading B8T. A sealing closure, of the crown or screw-on type, for a container 30 comprises a cap 10, Fig. 4, having a continuous groove 12, the edges of which provide pressure ridges 17, 18; and a sealing-lining element 20 of resilient material, e.g. a plastics material, including a sealing member 22 adjacent the groove, such that before the cap is applied to the container a portion of the member is outside the groove. The skirt of the cap is fitted with dimples 14a or an annular groove to retain the element in the cap. During capping, extrusion of the sealing element is prevented by high pressure applied at the ridges, and the sealing member becomes confined between the groove and the container lip when capping is completed, Fig. 5 (not shown). Out-of-flat deviations of the container lip 31 are accommodated by varying amounts of vertical travel of the sealing member during capping. In the embodiment of Fig. 7 (not shown), the groove (56) is defined by two depressions (54), (55) which form pressure ridges. The sealing-lining element may be formed with a central liner portion 21, or simply with a narrow flange (71), Fig. 7. The sealing member of the element may be a full O-ring of solid cross-section, Fig. 10 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 13 (not shown) the shape of the cap has been so adjusted during capping that the groove space and the volume of the ring are equal. A further embodiment of the sealing-lining element comprises simply an O sealing ring of solid cross-section.
