Abstract

A ceramic material comprises a sintered mixture of the titanates of the metals magnesium, strontium, lead and bismuth, and optionally lanthanum; niobium may replace part of the titanium of the titanates. The mixture is stoichiometric, or non-stoichiometric to the extent of a deficiency of up to 10% titanium atoms. A preferred mixture comprises 10-65% MgTiO3, 10-45% SrTiO3, 5-35% PbTiO3, 5-40% Bi2Ti2O7 and 0.3% La2Ti2O7 with 0-15 atomic per cent of the titanium replaced by an equivalent amount of niobium, and is prepared either by reacting titanium dioxide, niobium pentoxide and the individual oxides (or their precursors) of the other metals at elevated temperatures and mixing and sintering the resultant titanates or by mixing titanium dioxide and niobium pentoxide with the oxides (or their precursors) of the other metals and heating them to produce a metal titanate mixture.
