Abstract

889,990. Ceramic dielectrics. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Feb. 21, 1958 [Feb. 21, 1957; Feb. 22, 1957], No. 5789/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. In a method of making a ceramic dielectric, a substance having a tetragonally or rhombically distorted Perovskite crystal structure, and which is in the ferro-electric state, is converted to an anti-ferro-electric state by incorporating into the ceramic an oxide of a metal which can form bivalent and trivalent oxides. The ferroelectric ceramic has the formula Me" Me<1v> O3 (Me<11>, Me<1v> being metals from Groups II and IV of the Periodic Table), and the metal whose oxide is added to this ceramic is from Group X (Me<x>), the total atomic proportion of the metals Me" and Me<x> not exceeding the atomic proportion of the metal Me<1v>. The metal Me<1v> is preferably titanium; Me" is preferably an alkaline earth metal such as calcium, strontium or barium; and Me<x> is preferably nickel. A mixture of barium carbonate, titanium oxide, nickel trioxide, and zirconium dioxide is heated at 1000‹ C. for about two hours; the resulting ceramic, having a distorted Perovskite structure and a composition of the form (Ba, Ni) (Ti, Zr)O3, is ground to a grain size below 2Á and pressed into the required shape to constitute a capacitor dielectric, using a hydrocarbon plasticizer. The dielectric slab so formed is sintered in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1320‹ C. for about ten minutes. Specifications 703,030 and 758,145 are referred to.
