Abstract

1,241,974. Barium titanate; refractories. NATIONAL LEAD CO. 31 July, 1968 [31 July, 1967]. No. 36601/68. Headings C1A and CIJ. A calcined powder of barium titanate, having an average particle size of 0À5-2 Á, and an average crystallite size of 0À3-0À5 Á, with substantially all crystallites within the range 0À1-1À0 Á, and a BaO: TiO 2 mole ratio of 1À00- 1-02 may be prepared by forming a mixture of a finely divided BaO or BaO-forming material, a TiO 2 or a TiO 2 -forming material having an average particle size from 0À1 to 1.0 Á, and up to 0À5 mole per cent of a grain growth inhibitor, the BaO and TiO 2 materials being present in such an amount as to give a product with a mole ratio BaO: TiO 2 of 1À00-1À02, calcining at 1260-1370‹ C. for such a time as to form crystallites of the titanate of average size 0À3-0À5 Á, substantially all crystallites being within the range 0À1-1 Á, and comminuting the titanate to the required particle size without significant introduction of impurity Nb 2 O 5 may be used as the grain growth inhibitor. The powder may also include an oxide which shifts the Curie temperature, preferably an oxide which may replace the Ti in the titanate, e.g. ZrO 2 , SnO 2 , Sb 2 O 5 , Nb 2 O 5 , and the powder may also contain 2-7% bismuth oxide. In examples, various mixed oxides are added to the powder e.g. Bi 2 O 3 .3TiO 2 ; BaO.Sb 2 O 5 ; Bi 2 O 5 .Zro 2 ; BaSnO 3 ; BaZrO 3 ; PbO.Nb 2 O 5 ; BaO.Nb 2 O 5 . The powder may be compressed at superatmospheric pressure, and fired at normal atmospheric pressure, to give a shaped ceramic body.
