Abstract

1332675 #-Alumina ceramics ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 6 Nov 1970 [10 Nov 1969] 52967/70 Heading C1J Beta alumina empirical formula M n O y . 11Al 2 O 3 , is produced by reacting together sufficient amounts of (i) alumina hydrate and/or calcined alumina, (ii) a source of fluorine and (iii) a metal amide other than alumina at 900- 1600‹ C. for 10 minutes to 30 hours to produce amounts of alumina, fluorine and a metal oxide calculated as M x O y wherein x = 1 or 2, y = 1 or 3 and when y = 3, y = 2 defined by the area ABCDEFG of the phase diagram (not illustrated). M may be a mono or divalent metal e.g. LiAg, Pb, Ga, Tl, In, K, Na, Ca, Sr, Cs, La, Mg, Ba and the preferred source of F is AlF 3 . The product which contains at least 85% of Al 2 O 3 has median crystal size 5-15 microns and in all examples was ground with isostearie acid, pressed and fired in the presence of unground starting material. The density of. the fired #-Al 2 O 3 product of the invention ranges from 1À3-3À2g./c.c.
