A circular knitting machine comprises a positive yarn feed contrasting of one or two rotary components rigidly secured to a spindle 5 driven at a fixed speed by the knitting machine and two freely rotatable nip components whose axes are parallel to the spindle axis and which are mounted on levers and biased so as to engage and be driven by the or each rotary component so as to feed at least two yarns. As shown, Fig. 1, spindle 5 is mounted in a vertical bearing tube formed in a casting 1 having horizontal arms 1b, 1c, arm 1b being secured to the knitting machine. Spindle 5 has, at its lower end, a pinion 6, Fig. 2 (not shown) which meshes with the stems 7a of needles 7 and, at its upper end, two spaced discs 9,10, disc 9 being the larger. Discs 15 and 17 of the same sizes respectively as discs 10 and 9 are adjustably mounted on the ends of pivoted levers 12, 13 pivoted on arm lc and converted by a spring 18 to bias discs 15,17 against discs 9, 10. Yarn guides 20 on carriers 19, 21 guide yarns Y<SP>1</SP>,Y<SP>2</SP> between nips N<SP>1</SP>, N<SP>2</SP> between discs 15 and 19 and 17 and 10. A cam 22 fixed on a pivoted lever 23 is located between levers 12, 13 so that movement of the cam separates discs 15, 17 from discs 9, 10 to stop feeding of the yarns. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), one large driven disc 9 is engaged by two smaller discs 15, 27 of the same size and in another arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), a second set of three discs, in which a small driven disc engages two large discs, is superimposed on the arrangement of Fig. 3, all the large discs and all the small discs being of the same size.
