Abstract

1,026,428. Roll housings. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Feb. 17, 1964, [Feb. 18, 1963] No. 6462/64. Heading B3M. A tilting roll housing in a mill suitable for rolling billets, rods or wire, is provided with a tilting axis set at 45 degrees to the horizontal. The housing, including its sole plate is rockable through 180 degrees about the axis between horizontal and vertical dispositions. The rolls 2 of a housing 1 on a sole plate 3 are vertically disposed and driven via coupling 10, gearing 9, bevel gearing 13 and 11, and 12 and 20 from a single motor. The housing is adjustable vertically by an hydraulic ram 7 to align the rolls with a pass line. To rotate the housing, a clutch 17 connects the bevel gear 13 with a casing 18, thus blocking the drive to the gears 9 and causing the housing, sole plate, an integral casing 15, and the gearing to be rotated through 180 degrees about the axis 8. Clamps 21 lock the assembly in position (Fig. 2, not shown). An hydraulic ram 6 can now adjust the housing on the sole plate. In an alternative form the housing and sole plate only are rotated, with separate vertical and horizontal driving spindles for the rolls remaining stationary.
