Abstract

1,043,239. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Sept. 30, 1963 [Oct. 12. 1962], No. 38680/62. Heading B3M. A rolling mill is provided with two turrets arranged on parallel vertical axes, each turret carrying two rolls, to allow one of the two rolls to be rotated on the turret into an operative position. Vertical turrets 24 and 25, carrying rolls spaced on opposite sides of the turret axis, are mounted in housings 15, 16 and 21, 22. Co-operating projections (Fig. 4, not shown) retain the housings in position, and are positioned on the horizontal beams 13 and 14 of the mill stand. The rolls are driven through couplings 62 from a motor 64, and pass adjustment of the rolls is effected by vertical and lateral adjustment of the turret 24. Lateral adjustment is by screws operated through gearing 49 and 50 from a motor 51, while vertical adjustment is by means of a rod 41 operated by a piston cylinder assembly 38. When the roll 28 is in a desired position a nut 61 on a link 58 is tightened to hold the roll in that position. The rod 41 and assembly 38 are also operated when the turret 24 is to be rotated for a change of roll, the rod raising the turret until the couplings 62 are disconnected and an opening 47 in a flange 48 of turret co-operates with a sleeve 46. A ratchet wheel 45, and hence the turret, are rotated through 180 degrees by further pistoncylinder assembly 42 to move the new roll into position. A similar arrangement is used for the turret 25. Entry and exit guides are attached to the turrets and are rotated with their associated rolls.
