Abstract
1,100,012. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. 8 Oct., 1964 [8 Oct. 1963], No. 39568/63. Heading B3M. A vertical rolling mill includes an outer open-top housing having uprights 11 and 12, and an inner housing including horizontal beams 16 and 17 in the windows of which are mounted the chocks of two rolls 21 and 22. The rolls are able to be removed from the outer housing either by lifting them vertically, or by horizontally shifting them, as a unit with the inner housing, along rails 103. The driving spindles 48 and 49 of the rolls are constructed so that they remain in their vertically aligned positions when the rolls are removed vertically, thus obviating any realignment when replacement rolls are fitted. The roll 22 is adjusted laterally by screws 25 driven from a motor 27, while verticle adjustment of the rolls and the inner housing is effected by motor driven screws 90 and 91. A beam 96 and links 97 cause the driving spindles 48 and 49 to be adjusted vertically as a unit with the rolls, a spliced driving connection at the lower ends of the spindles accommodating the vertical movement. The spindles are driven from a motor through gearing 62-68. The rolls are balanced by pivoted, counterbalanced, hooks 33 operated by hydraulic cylinder 32 and co-operating with hooks 35 attached to beams 34 connecting the roll chocks. When the rolls are lifted from their driving spindles, internal springs 76 and 87, Fig. 3, in the spindles, extend to cause a number of co-operating sleeves to retain the spindles and couplings in their upright positions. Before removing the rolls vertically or horizontally the screws 90 and 91 are operated to lower the inner housing and rolls until abutments 101 of the housing rest on rails 103. Further movement of the screws causes the spindles 48 and 49 to be uncoupled from the roll ends to allow roll removal. A piston and cylinder assembly 106 is able to slide the inner housing and rolls along the rails 103 and simultaneously position a replacement set (in dotted lines) within the outer housing. The rolls may alternatively be removed vertically using hooks 24, or may be lifted, together with the inner housings, by means of lugs 20a.
