Abstract

1,049,763. Rolling. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 6, 1964 [May 16, 1963], No. 19584/63. Heading B3M. A pair of rolling mill stands 12 and 13 for a rod mill are mounted on a common underframe 14, the stand 13 being adjustable on the underframe in a direction transverse to the rolling line. The two rolls 30 of stand 12 are provided with a number of oval passes, the rolls 31 of the following stand 13 having twice that number of round passes. When a circular pass of rolls 31 becomes worn the whole stand is shifted laterally to present an adjacent round pass for alignment with the same oval pass of stand 12. By the time that round pass is worn, the oval pass is also worn and the two stands on the underframe are lifted clear of the pass line and replaced by fresh stands. Each stand is supported on cams 24, rotatably mounted on shafts 25, the shafts being carried in lugs 28 upstanding from the underframe. The stands are bolted down to the lugs using quickly releasable nuts 38. The angular positions of the cam 24 determine the vertical height of the stands. A gap (Fig. 2, not shown) exists between each lug 28 of stand 13 and the two cams flanking it to allow lateral shifting of the stand by means of a pivoted lever 41 and links 43. Plates 36 locate the housing relative to the cam 24, and lugs 34, and 35, Fig. 1, locate each stand relative to the underframe. The upper T-shaped portion 20 of each stand is prestressed by bolts 2 to the lower U-shaped portion 17.
