Abstract
1,010,831. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Oct. 17, 1962 [Oct. 20, 1961], No. 37759/61. Heading B3M. The combination of a rolling mill and roll changing apparatus comprises a rig having two roll supporting positions, one position being alignable with the mill in order that a roll may be removed, and the other position allowing insertion of a replacement roll on moving the rig relative to the mill. A roughing universal mill 11 has two such rigs while an edging mill 12 has one, each rig comprising a rail-borne carriage having two roll supporting positions. In each case a roll to be removed is shifted axially on to the carriage, the carriage is shifted laterally, and the replacement roll is moved axially into the mill. Rig 44, for replacing the upper roll and chocks of the universal mill 11, runs an elevated rails 40 and 41. In plan view, Fig. 1, a carriage 50 is about to remove roll 16 from the mill, the roll being drawn by a hook 53, Fig. 2, along a support bar 25. The roll chocks have projections which slide in grooves in the bar 25, the roll and bar having been positioned vertically prior to roll removal. A motor-driven pinion 51a co-operating with a rack 52 moves the carriage 50 and roll assembly from the mill. The rig 44 is then moved transversely by motordriven wheels 45 against stops 42a at which position a replacement roll assembly 16a may be similarly shifted by a carriage 49 into the mill. The lower roll assembly 17 of universal mill 11 is similarly replaced by an assembly 17a, the transverse motion of rig 56 being by means of a piston cylinder assembly 60, Fig. 1, and the axial movement of the rolls being effected by the hook 63 of a piston cylinder assembly 61. Attached to the rig 56 is a rig 67 so that simultaneously with replacement of the lower roll assembly 17, both rolls of the edger mill are replaced, spacers 37 serving to support the upper chocks on the lower ones. Before replacement of the lower roll assemblies of mills 11 and 12, bars 26 and 35 respectively, on which the roll chocks slide, are adjusted by screws 23 and 36 to the appropriate height.
