In a bagging machine, for use with a weighing machine, a pivotable commodity containing feed shoot 6 Fig. 1 is held by a catch 11 in a discharge position until a predetermined load is in a bag (not shown) on the weigh platform 2 whereupon the catch is automatically released and the shoot pivots back to a rest position on a stop 9 by the action of a spring or by gravity. Material may be fed to the shoot from a hopper 10 or a conveyer. A spring loaded bolt 32 (Figs 1 + 3) on the shoot engages the catch 11 which is fixed to a spindle 12 rotatable in bearings 13 carried on a frame member 14 of the bagging machine. The spindle is fixed to a beam 15 which carries at one end a screwed rod 16 and at the other end a follower rod 21 with a roller 24. The rod 16 passes freely through a hole in a bracket 18 secured to the frame member 14, and a spring 19 on rod 16 urges the beam 15 in a clockwise direction. The follower roller 24 is thus urged against a weigher member 4 which is rigid with a weigh beam. As the weigh beam moves with the load on platform 2 so does the member 4 and hence the follower 21, 24 and beam 15. The catch 11 is thus disengaged from the shoot when a predetermined load is achieved which depends on the adjustment of spring 19 and the shoot pivots back to rest on the stop 9. The discharge may be thus stopped automatically before the required quantity of material is in the sack which is then topped up manually to the desired weight. As the shoot tips back a chain 25 pulls the beam 15 and follower unit upward away from the weigher which is a completely separate apparatus. There may be arrangements to stop the discharge from the hopper 10 to the shoot.
