In an automatic feeding device, for use in the weighing of material such as solid fuel, material from a hopper 1 (Fig. 1) is fed on to a plate 8 and from thence it falls to a plate 4 to which the plate 8 is attached by brackets 7. The rear end of plate 4 is supported on rollers 5, while its front or discharge end is supported on links 6 and connected to a motor driven eccentric whereby the plate is given a reciprocating motion. The links 6 cause it also to rise and fall thus conveying material toward the discharge end and into a weigh container (not shown). The plate 8 reciprocates with plate 4 its free end being supported on rollers 9. When almost the desired weight of material is in the container the weighing scale (not shown) operates a switch to energize a solenoid 40 which releases a latch on a door 34 allowing it to fall until the brush 35 thereon engages the plate 4. Further discharge from plate 4 is thus prevented. The container may then be topped up manually, or automatically by means of a dribble feed trough 20 mounted to receive some of the material falling toward plate 4. The trough is fixed to the plate 4 and reciprocates therewith and the arrangement is such that when the door 34 falls on the plate 4 material can be discharged from the narrow end of the trough 20 to the weigh container. A second gate member 42 connected by links to the door 34 closes at the same time as door 34 and prevents further feed from the plate 8 to the plate 4. A trickle feed is possible, however, through a central adjustable aperture (Fig. 4, not shown) in the gate member 42, to the trough 20. When the correct weight is in the container a switch operated by the weigher stops the motor. Alternatively the dribble feed trough may be mounted below plate 4 (Fig. 6 not shown) in which case material falls through a slot or slots in plate 4 to the trough.
