Improvements to devices for producing selvedges, in particular for shuttle-less looms.
The present invention refers to devices suitable for producing edges on fabrics which may constitute the equivalent of the edges obtained on the conventional loom. We know that this question of producing or forming edges on fabrics arises in various cases, in particular on shuttle-less looms in which the successive picks are inserted by a weft pass from a fixed reserve, the weft thread being cut after each pick.
Among the methods which have been proposed for the formation of such edges, one is known which consists in introducing into the pitch, from the side concerned and over a small width of the fabric, a double auxiliary thread which is clamped in the pitch. with the main weft, forming loops on the edge which are suitable for retaining the warp threads, that is to say for constituting a real added selvedge. However, the implementation of this method has so far required mechanisms comprising various members, arranged so as to be erased during the strike of the clapper. The adjustment of these mechanisms was delicate and on the other hand they hampered the other organs which must be made to include in a loom in the vicinity of the weaving point, in particular the templets.
The present invention aims, on the contrary, to make it possible to produce a very simple mechanism, of small bulk, and suitable for being mounted in a fixed position on the loom in a position such that it completely frees the space necessary for the templets and the like.
According to the invention, the selvage thread is introduced into the pitch by means of a curved oscillating arm in the form of a hook, articulated on an axis perpendicular to the plane of the fabric and arranged on the side of the latter so that when said arm or hook is in the retracted position, it completely clears the space necessary for the movement of the leaf and therefore does not itself have to be moved back.
The invention further relates to a mechanism comprising essentially a support, preferably in the form of a box, carrying a drive shaft disposed transversely to the loom, a first cam mounted on this shaft and ensuring the control of the aforementioned oscillating arm articulated around it. 'an axis perpendicular to the plane of the fabric, and a second cam also mounted on the aforementioned shaft and which actuates a nose mounted on an auxiliary shaft parallel to the previous one and carrying on the outside a clean oscillating needle to be retained in the pitch at the time wanted the selvage thread inserted by the hook, then to be erased perpendicular to the fabric to allow the passage of the comb during the blow of the beating.
It will be understood that the mechanism according to the invention first of all has the advantage of being unitary, that is to say that all its members are carried by the same support or box. On the other hand, the arrangement of the control shaft of the mechanism makes it possible to couple very simply by means of a transverse shaft the two selvedge mechanisms located on either side of the fabric. Finally, the articulation of the arm or hook for inserting the selvedge thread around an axis perpendicular to the plane of the fabric and that of the retaining needle around a transverse axis make it possible to ensure the complete erasure of these two organs during the strike without it being necessary to provide a particular movement of the entire mechanism.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it possible to better understand the invention, the characteristics that it has and the advantages that it is likely to provide: FIG. 1 is a schematic perspective view showing a device according to the invention arranged on the edge of the fabric in a loom without a shuttle to allow the production of selvedges; Fig. 2 to 5 are diagrams showing the various phases of the operation of the device of FIG. 1; Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of this device, the cover supposedly removed to allow the interior mechanism to be seen in which the control cam of the hook has been shown in section for clarity of the drawing; Fig. 7 is the corresponding side view with partial section along VII-VII (fig. 6); Fig. 8 is a section along VIII-VIII (fig. 7); Fig. 9 is a side view with the wall of the housing partially cut away to reveal the needle control cam, the latter being shown in the raised position.
The apparatus shown schematically in fig.la was supposed to be mounted on a loom without a weft-passing needle shuttle, on the side of the loom corresponding to the entry of the needle into the pitch.
This device comprises a housing 1 integral with a lateral collar 1a by the poyeu of which it is fixed to a transverse bar 2 of the loom, on one of the sides of the fabric 3, in the immediate vicinity of the weaving point. To fix ideas, we have very schematically represented at 4 and 5 the two chain layers assumed to be in the open position. The box 1 carries a vertical axis 6 (which can be seen better in fig. 2 to 5) on which is mounted an arm 7 in the form of a hook, the perforated end of which forms a guide for the selvedge thread 8 coming from a reserve. fixed 9 through an appropriate brake 10. The housing 1 also carries a horizontal axis 11 on which is mounted a needle 12, the vertical point 12a of which is intended to cooperate with the hook 7 to retain the selvage thread 8 inside the no Fig. 2 to 5 give a good understanding of the general operation of the device. In fig. 2 the hook 7 has been erased laterally by rotation about its axis 6. The needle 12 is raised and is not shown in FIG. 2. The comb 13 of the loom is then in the retracted position, the pitch is open, the weft needle 14 being in the retracted position on the side of the loom considered (which is the entry and exit side of the loom. needle).
In fig. 3 the weft passing needle 14 has crossed the pitch to get the weft thread on the other side of the loom (left side). At the same time, the hook 7 is engaged in the pitch by rotation around its axis 6, bringing with it the selvedge thread 8. The needle 12 has been lowered so that its point 12a engages in the 'angle formed by the end of the hook 7 and the strand of thread which connects this end to the edge of the fabric 3.
In fig. 4 the needle 14 is withdrawn by depositing in the pitch a pick /. At the same time, the hook 7 has returned to the rear by pulling the selvedge thread 8. But the latter has remained retained in the pitch by the point 12a of the needle, so that it forms an angle, the point of which is situated at the edge. inside the step. In fig. 5 the leaf 13 has moved forward at the same time as the needle 12 has risen, thereby completely freeing the space necessary for the movement of the leaf. The loop which the selvage thread had formed in the pitch was therefore taken in it and tightened with the pick /.
It will be understood without further explanation that the loops of thread 8 thus tightened one after the other constitute a true selvedge which effectively maintains the edge of the fabric against any risk of fraying.
Fig. 6 to 9 clearly show the detail of the device summarily represented in FIG. 1.
As can be seen in these figures the housing 1 is open upwards, its outlet being normally closed by a cover 15 held in place by suitable screws. Its vertical side opposite to the fixing collar carries a bearing 16 for the vertical axis 6 of the hook 7. As clearly shown in fig. 7, this pin 6 passes through the bottom of the case to carry a die 17 inside which a screw 18 blocks a rod 7a which supports the curved part of the hook 7, made in a very flat form so as to be inserted without difficulty between the warp threads.
As shown in fig. 6, this hook is pierced at two points 7b and 7c for the passage of the selvedge thread (not shown in FIGS. 6 to 9).
The axis 6 carries, inside the housing 1, a small hub 19 integral with an arm 20 at the end of which is mounted a roller 21, this arm 20 being biased by a torsion spring 22 wound on the axis 6 and resting against the wall of the housing below a stop ring 23 wedged on the axis 6.
The roller 21 receives the action of the profiled edge of a cylindrical cam 24 mounted on a tubular shaft 25 rotatably carried by two small bearings 26 secured to the side walls of the housing 1. As clearly shown in FIG. 6, the shaft 25 is parallel to the support bar 2, that is to say it is transverse to the loom. This shaft 25 is crossed by a control shaft 27 which, when necessary, can run over the entire width of the loom to simultaneously actuate a device symmetrical to that described and arranged on the other edge of the fabric.
On this motor shaft 27 is mounted a ring 28 integral with a lateral transverse tooth 28a which engages in a screwdriver slot 25a provided at one of the ends of the tubular shaft 25.
The shaft 25 still carries inside the housing a second cam 29 acting radially (see FIG. 9). This cam cooperates with a nose 30 wedged on the horizontal axis 11 of the needle 12. As shown in FIG. 8, the nose 30 is subjected to the action of a return spring 31 wound on the shaft 11 and which bears on the bottom of the housing 1. It extends outwards to carry a thimble 32 fixed in place by a screw 33 which at the same time ensures the blocking inside this thimble of the heel of the needle 12, made in the form of a metal wire of sufficient rigidity, bent twice at 90 [deg]. As clearly shown in fig. 1, the whole of the apparatus constitutes a unitary block which is fixed in place by a single collar and which can easily be controlled by means of a chain, a cardan shaft, etc., as appropriate. When an apparatus is provided on each side of the fabric, the arrangement described allows their simultaneous training without requiring any additional mechanical device. The rod 7a can easily be long enough so that the whole of the housing 1 is behind the forward position of the leaf and therefore does not interfere with the operation of the latter, the hook 7 itself being able to be sufficiently erased. on the side, while the needle 12 is itself sufficiently raised, as clearly shown in fig. 9 so that the comb can pass under the tip of the needle. There is thus no longer any need to move all the parts back, as in known devices.
It must also be understood that the above description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention, which would not be departed from by replacing the details of execution described. by all other equivalents.
