The loom represented is a loom with flying shuttles, comprising equipment known for imparting a back and forth movement to the leaf and equipment also known for moving each shuttle across the leaf and for ensuring the arrival of the warp threads. . The loom in question is new from the point of view of the mode of insertion of the weft thread and of the means provided for forming the edge forming the selvedge.
The leaf, which is designated as a whole by 500, moves back and forth between a front position (shown in solid lines in FIG. 2) and a rear position (shown in broken lines in this same figure) in the usual manner under the effect of a crank 502 when a loom main drive shaft 504 is rotating.
The warp threads 506 are supplied by a hose 508 which is located at the rear of the loom; they pass through metal strips 510 of a conventional electrically controlled mechanism, forming a thread breaker, also passing through heddles 512 and between the teeth of a tamping comb 514 to arrive at the already woven part 516 of the stuff in the usual way.
The heddles 512 through which the warp threads pass are mounted in frames 513 (fig. 1) in the usual manner and they rise and fall under the action of pivoting arms forming a rack 520, these arms themselves being controlled by the operator. mechanism of a chain of design generally indicated by 522 so as to impose on the warp threads the pitch necessary for the passage of the shuttle. The creation of the pitch, in other words of the crowd, for the passage of the shuttle, is classic in the technique of weaving and, as it is not necessary for the understanding of the invention, it will not be described here in detail.
In the loom shown, the shuttle is born across the flapper 500 and passes through the pitch formed by the warp threads under the action of conventional type hunting whips 524 and 526. The hunting whip 524, which is similar to the hunting whip 526, is connected to a hunting-shuttle cleat 528 (fig. 13) which slides on a rod 530 mounted at the rear part of the right shuttle box 532 and enters this box through a slot (not shown) so as to strike the shuttle as will moreover be explained below.
Since the actuation of the shuttle back and forth across the slide of the flapper 500 and forward of the teeth of the comb 514 under the action of the hunting whips is well known, it is well known. will not describe it here in detail. Each of the shuttle boxes is provided with brakes such as the one designated by 540 and which is associated with the right hand shuttle box 532.
It will be noted that this brake 540 is subjected to the action of springs 542 which push it towards the rear wall of the shuttle box and its role is to reduce the speed of the movement which drives the shuttle when it arrives. in its box at the end of the slide 534 of the leaf 500.
The weft threads are held in a support or thread carrier, while the shuttle moves through the pitch formed by the warp threads, in order to transfer this thread carrier between neighboring receivers on each of the ends of the leaf 500 Means are provided at each end of the flap to hold the weft thread to be incorporated into the fabric being woven in the retaining members of the thread holder when it is in the receivers.
Other members are also provided for releasing the weft threads from the thread carrier when they are in the receivers after having been driven transversely to the leaf.
544 designates as a whole the support of the weft threads also called the thread carrier and, in fig. 4, this thread holder is shown between claws 548 and 552 of the shuttle 554. In operation, and as described below, the claws 548 and 552 act to transfer the thread holder in question between receivers which are mounted near each of the ends of the leaf 500 such as the one designated by 556 (fig. 10 and 11) on the right side of the leaf.
Receiver 557 (fig. 20), which is located on the left side of the leaf, is obviously similar to the previous one. These receivers will be described in more detail below.
The thread holder 544 (fig. 7, 8 and 9) is designed so as to hold a weft thread when it is fixed therein, so that it carries this thread across the slide of the flapper 500 when it is gripped by the claws of the shuttle 554 and driven transversely to the leaf. The retaining members comprise a sliding bar 560 comprising a hook adjacent to each of its ends, capable of sliding in a slot 562 made in the body of the thread holder 544.
This bar 560 has a length calculated such that one of its hooked ends protrudes from the slot 562, while the other is inside the slot, as can be seen by examining figs. 14 to 16. The method of mounting the sliding bar 560 clearly follows from figs. 7 to 9.
The sliding bar 560 slides, as its name suggests, between a blade 563 placed against the side of the slot 562 of the body of the thread holder 544 and a pad 564 held against this bar by a spring 566 and subjected to the action of it. In the shoe 564 is mounted a bearing ball 568 which cooperates with holes 570 and 572 of the bar 560 to ensure the positioning of the latter in the slot 562 under conditions such as one or the other of its hooked ends protrude out of the slit.
The shoe 564 is made of a material with a certain flexibility, as is the case with nylon, and the holding force of the ball mounted in it is calculated so that it can be overcome to allow bar 560 to slide during operation.
During operation of the loom, and as described below, a weft yarn falls into the exposed hook end of the slide bar 560, after which the latter slides into the body of the yarn holder 544 to place the slider bar. end in which the wire fell into the slot and to expose the other hooked end.
As bar 560 slides as just said, the wire just placed in the exposed hook end is pulled into slot 562 first between shoe 564 and bar 560 and then pad is longer than blade 563. As the wire is pulled further into the slot by bar 560, it bears against the edge of blade 563 and is severed by the knife and the bar hook. One of the free ends thus formed is held in the slot between the pad 564 and the bar 560.
The other free end is released from the bar and held in place by a spring 804 of the templet (Fig. 23) until it returns to the edge of the fabric, as is described more fully below.
At the moment when a weft thread is fixed in one end of the yarn holder 544, as has just been described, another weft yarn held between the pad 564 and the bar 560 at the other end of the holder the thread is released at the moment when a hooked end of the bar 560 can protrude out of the end in question of the thread holder.
It will be noted that the top and the bottom of the thread holder 544 (fig. 5 to 7) are rounded and have a shape complementary to that of the gripping surfaces of the clips 548 and 552 of the shuttle. One of the sides of the thread holder 544 has a festoon 574 intended to cooperate with a pin 636 (FIG. 5) integral with the receiving members 556 and 557.
The opposite side of the thread holder 544 is provided with a channel 576 extending longitudinally over its entire length, in order to protect the thread held in the thread holder while leaving some clearance for it, so that it can be released when the wire holder is in the receiver as described below. It will also be noted that the spring 566 is provided with a boss 578 which fits into a round hole 580 on the side face of the body of the thread holder, in order to hold it positively in the hole.
The blade 563 has a boss 579 which cooperates in the same way with a hole in the thread holder, in order to ensure its positioning in a similar manner. It will be appreciated that when the spring 566 is loaded (as shown in Fig. 9) the boss 578 is engaged in the hole 580 to hold the flexible pad 564 with which it cooperates and to prevent it from moving from the slot 562. towards the body of the thread holder and that, in addition,
the boss 579 rests in its respective hole in the body of the thread holder. The limits of movement of the sliding bar 560 are determined, as has been said above, thanks to the cooperation of the holes 570 and 572 provided in this bar with the ball bearing 568 carried by the flexible shoe 564.
The shuttle 554 (fig. 4, 5, 6 and 7) comprises, as has already been indicated, members serving to transfer the thread holder 544 between the two receivers and it is provided for this purpose with a channel 582 s 'extending longitudinally to it and in which are mounted the two claws 548 and 552. The latter are preferably made of a hard fibrous material and are mounted respectively on springs 584 and 586 themselves mounted rigidly on the walls of the canal 582 at the places indicated by 588 and 590 and by 592 and 594.
The claws 548 and 552 are mounted on their respective springs by means of screws 596 and 598 which pass through these springs and which are engaged in respective retaining plates 600 and 602 mounted at the rear part. These plates 600 and 602 limit the stroke of the respective claws towards the sides of the channel 582, while studs 604 and 606 carried by the plates 600 and 602 limit the stroke of the two claws towards each other as a result of their engagement with the side edges of a plate 608. The latter is fixed in the channel 582 by bolts 609.
A second channel 610 is provided on the opposite side of the shuttle ; it cooperates with a rib 627 (fig. 10) placed at the entrance of the shuttle boxes and acts as a guide for the shuttle at the time. where it enters the boxes, as explained below. In addition, the end of the shuttle has a ramp 612 which cooperates with the receiver to ensure its alignment, in order to allow it to receive the thread holder as explained below.
The clamping claws 548 and 552 are normally subjected to the action of the respective springs 584 and 586 to come to occupy a closed position and thus to grip the thread holder 544, as shown in FIGS. 4, 6 and 7. However, when the thread holder meets the receiver, it acts against it and is thus ejected by sliding out of the claws and is lodged in its fired end as shown in fig. 14 and 17.
It should be added that, in FIG. 4, the shuttle is shown as it looks when viewed during operation from the rear part of the loom, i.e. the side of the shuttle visible in this figure butts against the teeth of the comb 514 during operation.
As indicated above, there are receivers 556 and 557 near each of the ends of the slide 534 of the leaf 500.
As shown in Figs. 11, 13, 18 and 19, the receiver placed on the right side of the leaf 500 and designated as a whole by 556 is similar to the receiver placed on the left side; it comprises a bar 614, one end of which is dropped as shown in 616 and pivots near its other end on a tab 618 which protrudes from a rack 620 in order to be placed above the slide 534 of the leaf 500.
This mesh maker 620 can slide freely in the longitudinal direction of the leaf in a gearbox 622 which is rigidly mounted on the leaf. The tab 618 of the rack 620 passes through a longitudinal slot in the gearbox 622, so that the bar 614 of the receiver 556 is driven lengthwise to the leaf with the rack. The method of actuating the latter longitudinally in its gearbox is further described below.
The forked end 616 of the receiver 556 com carries an internal vertical wall 624 (fig. 5) having a convex profile in vertical cross section so as to be complementary to the concavity formed by the scalloped wall 574 of the thread holder 544. ; its opposite internal vertical wall 626 is placed at some distance to receive and hold the thread holder between the two walls when it is driven into contact with it by the shuttle.
It will be noted here that the bar 614 of the receiver 556 is located above the slide of the leaf 500 and that its longitudinal axis is in alignment with the channel 582 of the shuttle, this channel being large enough to be able to pass over it. of the bar 614, tan say that the shuttle goes back and forth across the slide of the leaf under the action of the hunting whips 524, 526.
As the shuttle 554 passes the receiver on its movement to its box, the claws 548 and 552 bring the yarn holder 544 into contact with the forked end of the receiver, so that the yarn holder is stopped in the receiver in the position shown in FIGS. 14 and 15. While the shuttle 554 continues its journey in its box, the claws subjected to the load of the springs slide over the thread holder 544 until their ends free it and their grip is reduced. .
It will be understood, on reading the above, that normally the shuttle does not follow exactly the same path each time across the slide 534 of the leaf 500 and that means are provided to ensure alignment between the shuttle and the receiver. and the alignment between it and the shuttle, so that the thread holder penetrates with the required precision into the forked end of the receiver.
The shuttle 554 is maintained in alignment in part by means of the longitudinal rib 627 integral with the vertical wall 628 of a housing 630 mounted on the leaf 500 (see FIG. 10) which cooperates with the longitudinal channel 610 of the shuttle. In fig. 11, this box 630 is removed from the loom of the loom so as not to confuse the design and allows the receiver to be seen clearly. But it must be understood that this box 630 is bolted on a bracket 632.
Devices are also provided for forcing the bar 614 of the receiver 556 to ensure precise alignment with the thread holder held in the grif fes of the moving shuttle when it enters the shuttle box. It will be noted in this regard that a spring 634, one end of which passes through a hole made in the rack 620 and the other end of which passes through a hole in the bar 614 of the receiver, is compressed in order to separate the forked end normally. gearbox bar 622 until it is brought to the position drawn in solid lines. in fig. 19. It will be remembered that the bar 614 is pivotally mounted on the tab 618.
The contact of this bar with the gearbox constitutes the stop device which limits the position of the bar 614 towards the outside.
The bar 614 can be deflected despite the pressure of the spring 634 to come, if necessary, to occupy the position shown in broken lines in FIG. 19.
As the shuttle first approaches the receiver, the curved surface 612 of its end engages against the curved portion 636 of the forked end of the bar 614 to move it inward from the position drawn in. solid lines up to the position drawn in broken lines over a distance sufficient to ensure the precise alignment of the receiver in its permitted movement plane, the thread holder being clamped between the claws of the shuttle, in order to be able to penetrate into the forked end of the receiver.
The channel 610 and the rib 627 which cooperates with it tend to stabilize the shuttle 554 in a direction perpendicular to the slide of the leaf 500.
As the shuttle leaves its box at the end of the flapper and as it moves to the other side of the loom, the springs 584 and 586 of the claws flex upon meeting the thread holder in the receiver, so that the claws open to engage with yarn holder 544 and hold it between their ends, driving it to the receiver which is on the other side of the loom.
When the yarn holder 544 is first brought to a forked end of a receiver, it holds the free end of the weft yarn in its end which first enters the receiver, and an empty hook of the bar. slide 560 protrudes from its other end and protrudes from the receiver bar as shown in fig. 16 and 17. The weft thread which is fixed in its first mentioned end has been driven transversely to the flap 500 and has passed through the pitch made by the warp threads coming from a spool or other supply mass placed behind the leaf and on the opposite side of the loom.
As described below, a pick is beaten, that is to say introduced into the fabric and is severed or released from the thread holder, then another weft thread from a reserve placed on the side of the loom where the thread holder is in the receiver is fixed therein so that it can be driven transversely to the leaf and through the open pitch made by the warp threads to reach the receiver on the side opposite of the trade. These operations are described in more detail later in this text.
As shown in fig. 2, the supply of a weft thread 644 is ensured by a spool 646 and the thread passes through suitable tensioners, then through a metal lamella 510 of an electrically operated mechanism forming a thread breaker, through a heddle 650, then through the comb 514 to gain the edge forming the edge of the fabric, then it crosses the latter to its known opposite side, as follows from the remainder of this description.
It will be noted that the heddle 650 is lifted ready to let its weft thread fall into the hooked end of the support bar as will be indicated below.
A weft yarn 642 comes from a spool similar to that designated by 646 but placed on the left side of the loom; it is brought in a manner analogous to what is the case for the wire 644, but the arrangement provided for this purpose is not specially shown.
In a variant to which FIG. 3, the weft yarn 644 comes from a spool 646a, passes through a tensioner 646b and an arm. slack adjustment hose 646c, through the metal lamella 510 of a thread breaker mechanism as above. The picks formed by the weft threads 642 and 644 are incorporated into the fabric by the shuttle which passes the thread carrier between the receivers as described below.
When the thread holder 544 is first transferred, for example, to the left side of the loom (see Fig. 20), it holds the free end of the weft thread 644 at its left end between the bar 560 and the flexible shoe 564. The weft thread 644 extends from the left end of the thread holder, follows the groove 576 therein, crosses the pitch of the warp threads to reach the right side of the loom and returns by passing between the teeth of the comb to regain supply reel 646 as has been said.
At the same time, weft yarn 642 extends from a spool, in an analogous manner, to yarn 644 of the selvage edge of the fabric on the left side of the loom from which it passes through the yarn fabric to gain the right border or zipper of the fabric. This wire has been lifted by its rail above the level of the wire holder 544.
A device is provided to hold the weft thread 642 which (as shown in fig. 20) has come to be placed above the flap in the right end of the thread holder 544 so that a pick formed by this thread can be incorporated into the fabric by the next passage of the shuttle 554 through the leaf. Means are provided for releasing the free end of the weft yarn 644 which has just been drawn across the leaf by the passage of the shuttle passing through the leaf.
It will be appreciated that when the weft yarn 642 is secured in the yarn holder, it must be severed and that there will inevitably be a loose end protruding from the edge or selvage of the fabric. There will also be a loose end of the weft thread 644 after it is released from the yarn carrier adjacent to the edge of the fabric. As indicated below, there are means for incorporating these free ends of the yarn at the edge or edge of the fabric.
If it is a question of weaving a typical worsted wool fabric, the flap 500 is halfway between its rear position and its front position and moves forward when the thread holder 544 enters the receiver 557 as shown in fig. 20.
The positive device which is provided for this purpose to fix the weft thread 642 in the thread holder 544, so that a pick of this thread can be introduced into the fabric up to the opposite side of the loom, comprises a suitable device. in moving the receiver 557 longitudinally to itself and to the right as well as a member to simultaneously drop the corresponding beam through which the wire 642 passes,
so that this wire 642 falls into the protruding right hooked end of the bar 560 assuming one looks at fig. 21.
When the leaf 500 continues its forward movement, the receiver 557 returns back to the left by a movement longitudinally to it, so that the free end of the hooked bar 560 is to the left of the temple 800.
When the leaf approaches its position of maximum advance, the receiver 557 moves again longitudinally to itself towards the right to oblige the free end of the bar 560 to come to bear against the side of the temple 800 and to slide the bar between the cutting blade 563 and the flexible pad 564.
This has the effect of securing the weft yarn 642 in the yarn holder, severing it to release its portion which protrudes out of the fabric and disengaging the weft yarn 644 from the yarn holder or support.
In fig. 14 to 17 are shown the two positions of the cutter bar relative to the thread holder. These figures show the wire carrier in the receiver on the right side of the flap 500, but it will be appreciated that the receivers on both sides are otherwise identical.
The wire holder is shown as it reaches the receiver in fig. 16 and 17, a weft thread 642 being in such a case attached to its right end.
Because it is imperatively brought into contact with the side of the templet 800, as has just been described with regard to the left side of the loom, the bar slides from the position shown in FIGS. 16 and 17 up to the position which is represented by FIGS. 14 and 15, the receiver 557 being cut with a slot 561 serving as a housing at the end of the double hook bar 560.
As the protruding end of the double hook bar 560 is pushed into the body of the thread holder 544, the thread which is in the protruding hook end of the bar 560 is first clamped between the part hooked and the flexible pad 564, then it is cut by this hooked member and by the cutting blade 563. Thus the free end of the weft thread is fixed in the retaining pad and the bar of the thread holder 544, while its other end resulting from the sectioning is free near the edge.
It will be appreciated that the protruding end of the double hook bar 560 is pushed into the yarn holder 544 from the position shown in FIG. 22 under conditions such that the free end of the weft yarn 644 which is held in the left end of this yarn holder between the hooked member and the flexible pad will be released since the hook which is at the left end of the support will protrude from the body thereof.
Thus, the free end of the weft thread 644 which was driven transversely to the loom during the last step of the shuttle is thus released from the support.
It may be desirable to leave free the end of the weft thread 642 which protrudes from the selvedge and the end of the weft thread 644 which has just been released, in order to form a fringe on the edge of the fabric, but means are described below for incorporating the free ends at the edge of the fabric under particularly elegant and advantageous conditions.
If the free ends of the weft thread are to be incorporated into the selvedge, a jet of air blows them back into the open pitch made by the warp threads and holds them there until the pitch is closed in order to trap in the fabric border.
According to a method to be adopted preferably for the formation of the border or selvedge, the pick 644 driven through the pitch by the thread holder is section born near but a little below the edge of the fabric, and its small end which extends between the location of the sectioning and the wire holder is held therein to be removed under the action of suction as described below.
The free end of the weft thread 642, a pick of which is about to be inserted into the fabric, and which is section born by the action of the sliding bar 560 and of the thread holder described above is , preferably held in a retention member prior to sec tioning, then released from this member at any appropriate time to be introduced into the open step by a jet of air.
In this regard, i.e. with regard to the retention of the free end of the weft yarn 642 before it is blown into the edge of the fabric, a plate 802 is provided. (Figs. 20 and 23), at the front end of the temple 800, which has a slot 803. A spring 804 is mounted rigidly so as to press against the upper edge of the slot 803 as shown in FIG. 23.
This slot 803 occupies such a location and the front end of the spring 804 is itself curved such that, when the flap of the loom moves forward before the weft thread is severed by the thread holder bar, this weft thread penetrates between the upper edge of the slot 803 and the spring 804 and is held by it with a view to being incorporated subsequently by blowing into the selvedge.
An air projection nozzle 808 is provided and its stem has an air outlet 810 (Fig. 21) and a V-shaped end 812. This nozzle is slidably mounted in the templet 800 so that its rod moves longitudinally on itself and abuts against the plate 802.
In its normal position which is represented by FIGS. 21 and 23, the rod of this nozzle 808 has the same extent as the slot and its V-shaped end extends across the mouth of the slot 803. A tension spring 814 which extends between the nozzle 808 and the tem- ple 800 maintains this nozzle in the above-mentioned normal position.
The front end of the flapper is engaged against a stud 815 (fig. 23) integral with the nozzle 808 during its forward movement in order to beat a pick of wire and to slide the nozzle backwards in its sliding mount. inside the templet despite the resistance opposed by the spring 814 and to move its rod longitudinally to itself and towards the rear of the slot.
As a result, the weft thread 642, which is hooked in the projecting end of the thread holder and which is driven forward by the flap as the latter progresses, can enter the slot 803 (as shown in fig. 22) in order to be retained between its upper edge and the spring 804.
As the flap of the loom moves forward, the weft thread thus retained in the slot is severed as a result of the cooperation between the thread holder and the temple 800 as described above. It will be understood that the free end of the weft thread 642 is retained in the slot 803 during cutting.
As the leaf moves rearward from its maximum advance position and after the weft thread 642 has been severed and its free end is held between the spring 804 and the edge 803 of the slot, the leaf disengages from the stud 815 and the tension spring 814 forces the nozzle 808 to slide forward in the temple 800, so that the V-shaped end 812 of the stem of the nozzle engages against the free end of weft yarn 642 and pushes it out of slot 803.
In addition, as the flapper moves backwards and the warp threads begin to open, a jet of air shoots out from the mouth 810 of the nozzle and blows the free end. weft thread in the open pitch in order to form the border or selvedge of the fabric. The air coming out of the nozzle 808 begins to act before the end of the nozzle, which is V-shaped, pushes the wire out and continues until there is any danger that the free end of the weft thread 642 comes out of the not be avoided.
The above-described method, by which the free end of the severed weft yarn is held in hand before it is blown into the border or selvedge of the fabric, should preferably be adopted. However, one could use a simple jet of air in order to introduce the free ends of the weft yarn by blowing into the edge or edge of the fabric.
In the foregoing, we have confined ourselves to mentioning the possibility of introducing by blowing the free end of the thread 642 which is located on the left side of the fabric, but it is obvious that there is also a free end of the yarn 644 which is released from the yarn holder and which must be introduced by blowing into the selvage of the fabric, or which must be disposed of in some other way if the fabric is to have an edge net.
In the case of weft yarn 644, it is preferable to cut it at a predetermined distance from the edge of the fabric, and then remove the short strand of this yarn which results therefrom and which protrudes from the place between the point and the end of the wire holder.
In fig. 10, 20 and 21 is shown a blade 820 forming a knife which is intended to cut the thread 644 after the pitch has closed on it in order to hold it during the advance movement of the pitch and after the wire holder came into the receiver placed on the left side of the loom as shown in fig. 20 to 22.
The blade 820 cooperates with one of the teeth of the comb of the loom in order to cut the thread 644 very close to the edge of the fabric and at a distance therefrom approximately equal to the length of the free end of the thread 642 which should be reincorporated into the selvedge, so that, when the free end of this thread 642 is introduced by blowing into the open pitch as described above, its free end extends to the free end of the thread 644 to the place where it is severed. This procedure gives the fabric an exceptionally neat and clean selvedge.
The knife 820 cooperates with one of the teeth of the comb 514 of the loom to ensure the cutting of the wire.
If the operation of the loom is in the conventional manner, the cutting of the wire may occur shortly before the flapper 500 reaches its central position before the yarn carrier 544 is in the receiver. At this moment, the comb 514 has advanced and the pitch has closed on the pick introduced into the fabric by the last pass of the shuttle, so that there is no movement after cutting and that its tension is thus maintained.
When the blade 820 cuts a weft yarn 644 as described, a small strand of this yarn is held in the yarn holder. When the weft thread 642 is secured in the thread holder, this small strand of thread is released. A suction tube 821 has its mouth disposed in the vicinity of the end of the receiver to remove these small strands of yarn as they are released from the yarn holder.
After the thread 644 has been released from the thread holder, the thread 642 is secured therein, and the pitch is sufficiently open, the shuttle is moved to drive the thread holder transversely to the right side of the thread. trade where the same operations occur.
Reference has been made to the device used to hold the weft yarn in the yarn holder, to release it and to incorporate the free ends of the weft yarn at the edge of the fabric without describing in detail all the devices provided. for this purpose.
The members used to fix the weft thread in the thread holder include the heddles mentioned above as well as the members used to raise and lower them, other members to move the receivers longitudinally, and finally the lateral part of templet 800. These organs are repeated, of course, on each side of the loom.
In fig. 12, 18 and 19 are shown members for moving the receiver longitudina Lement itself on the right side of the loom.
Receiver bar 614 moves back and forth under the action of a cam 656 mounted on a shaft 658 actuated from the main motor shaft of the loom to rotate counterclockwise (looking at Fig. 11) to half the speed of the main motor shaft of the loom. A roller 660 carried by an arm 662 cooperates with the cam 656. This arm 662 is articulated at 664 on the frame of the loom and subjected to its other extremity to the action of a res sort 666 in order to force the roller 660 to be worn against the cam 656.
A connecting rod 668 is pivotally connected to the arm 662 by means of a pin 670 and is articulated to an arm 672 by means of a pin 674. The arm 672 is rigidly connected to a shaft 676 which rotates between its ends in the gearbox 622 On the other end of the shaft 676 is mounted a pinion 677. It will be appreciated that, when the roller 660 follows the depressions of the profile of the cam 656, the rack and, therefore, the bar 614 of the receiver move. longitudinally to the leaf of the loom by virtue of the transmission system which has just been described.
The bar 614 of the receiver is in its normal position, that is to say in the position that it takes when it receives the thread holder, when the roller 660 bears against the rounded part 678 of the cam 656. When this cam turns anti-clockwise, the roller 660 enters a depression 680 (fig. 12). Obviously this forces the receiver bar to move forward, that is to say to the left in fig. 11.
As the rotation of the cam 656 continues, the roller 660 rises to a point 682 on the cam which forces the receiver bar to return to the rear, that is to say to the right. looking at fig. 11.
When the roller 660 encounters a depression 684 in the cam, the receiver bar moves sharply forward, that is, to the left (looking at fig. 11) a distance which is limited by the contact. of its end 636 with the side of the temple, then moves slowly backwards, that is to say to the right, to resume its normal position at the place indicated by 686. The above concerns the operation of the receiver placed on the right side of the loom, but it is obvious that the operation is the same for the receiver located on the left side of the loom.
In fig. 25 is shown the mode of operation of the heddles relative to the weft thread. The heddle which is on the right side of the loom is designated by 650. The heddle which is on the left side of the loom is similar to the previous one but, with regard to fig. 25, reference is made to the stringer which is on the left side and which is designated by 651 to distinguish it from the stringer which is on the right side.
The smooth -650 is connected by one end to a spring 900 and by its other end to a cord 902. This spring 900 is under tension and is connected by its end opposite to the frame of the loom in 904. The cord 902 passes over a pulley 906 and on a louse 907 to gain an arm 910 to which it is fixed at 912. A tension spring 914 is connected to the free end of the arm 910 at 916 and to the frame of the loom at 918. This arm 910 is mounted to be able to pivot on the frame of the loom. A cord 920 connects the arm 910 to a toothed rack 922.
The stringer 651 is also connected by one end to a tension spring 924 which is itself connected to the frame of the loom at 926. The opposite end of this stringer 651 is connected to a cord 928 which passes over pulleys 930 and 932 and which is connected to the swivel arm 910 at 934.
In the position shown, the beam 650 is in the raised position and the beam 651 in the lowered position. This last position is the one it comes to occupy when it presents the weft thread at the projecting hooked end of the thread support bar. The raised position is on the contrary that which the heddle takes when it is quite ready to drop its weft thread into the projecting hooked end of the thread holder as described above. It will be understood that the position of the two beams is governed by the position of the arm 910 and of the tension springs 900 and 924.
Thus, for example, when the arm 910 occupies the position shown, the spring 924 pulls the stringer 651 towards the lower position and that the stringer 650 is lifted to its raised position despite the tension of the counter spring 900.
With proper operation of the toothed arm linker 922, the arm 910 can be moved to the right despite the tension of the counter spring 914 to assume a similar position, but located forward of the position of the arm which is represented by 940. This movement allows the beam 650 to fall under the action of the spring 900 to take a position similar to the position of the beam 651. At the same time, the beam 651 is forced to rise when the spring 924 is loaded to come and take a position similar to the position shown for the beam 6.50.
When the rack 922 is again moved to the left, the arm 910 returns to the position shown under the action of the spring 914 and the heddles take the positions visible in FIG. 25 as a result of the action of the springs 900 and 924. Other means could be employed, of course, to raise and lower the rails.
The arm 940 is provided with rails similar to the rails 650 and 651 and connected to it in the same way. These runners are located behind the runners 650 and 651 and can be used to supply additional weft threads. It will be appreciated that allusion has been made in the present description to a fabric formed by a single weft yarn supplied on each side of the loom, but any number of weft yarns can be supplied for incorporation. for the fabric on condition that a heddle is provided for each weft thread as well as the organs used to raise and lower them as described, with a view to their arrival at the thread holder or support.
The operation of the rack 922 may be conventional. This is how it is possible to order it in such a way. suitable with the aid of the chain.e of ordinary design adjusted so as to ensure the actuation of the racks. desired, in order to order the smooth of the weft threads.
The fabric edging or selvedge forming device referred to includes the cutting blade 820 which, as noted, acts to sever a weft thread drawn across the loom after the carrier. wire has been deposited in the receiver and after the step has closed enough to prevent it from moving after sectioning. The blade 820 is controlled by a cam from the motor shaft of the loom and, in fig. 10, is shown the method of assembly and operation with respect to the right side of the loom.
The blade provided on each side of the loom is designated 820. As shown in fig. 10, this blade 820 is supported by a blade 850 articulated on an axis 854 implanted in a console 852. This is rigidly mounted on the upper bar of the comb of the loom thanks to a bolt 856, so that the blade 820 is normally placed behind the teeth of this comb, it being understood that this is the left side of the loom.
The normal position of the blade 820 is that which it takes when a roller 858 which runs alongside a cam 860 and which controls it crosses the rounded part of this cam. This roller 858 is mounted on an arm 862 which is itself articulated on the frame of the loom thanks to an axis 864. At its other end, that is to say at its free end, the arm 862 is connected to a control rod 866 at the location indicated by 868. At its other end, this rod 866 is articulated to a rod 870, itself articulated on the bar 850. A tension spring 872 is mounted between the frame of the loom and the end of the arm 862 to force the roller 858 to go along the cam 860.
It will be noted that this cam is round except where it has a single depression 878. During the rotation of the shaft 658, the roller 858 runs alongside the cam and enters the depression 878, then leaves it. It is obvious that, during this movement, the articulated transmissions which have just been described act to force the blade 820 carried by the pivoting bar 850 to go up and down. As indicated above, when the knife is in its normal position, it is just behind one tooth of the loom comb.
As it goes up, it goes through to the front of the comb of the loom to slip over and over the weft thread that has just been brought across the loom. The position occupied by the blade at this time is shown in fig. 21. It will be understood that this view represents the left side of the loom. When the blade falls to resume its normal position behind the comb, it cuts the weft thread through its cooperation with a tooth of the comb.
As indicated, the templet 800 comprises a nozzle 808 mounted to slide and subjected to the action of a spring 814 bringing it to the position shown in FIGS. 21 and 20. The air inlet which has already been mentioned, and which is intended to supply this nozzle 808, is effected by a tube 890 (fig. 11); it is suitably controlled by a cam 892 controlling one. finger 894 in order to control a valve 896. It will be appreciated that each time the cam 892 strikes the finger 894, while the shaft 658 is rotating, this finger 894 is actuated to cause the air jet to act.
The duration of application thereof can obviously be modified by influencing the duration of contact between the cam 892 and the finger 894. The templets provided on both sides of the loom are identical.
The operation of the loom represented will be described below. In order to facilitate the explanation, reference will be made to FIG. 24 which is a schematic representation of the fabric when the loom is in the position shown in FIG. 21. The weft yarn 644 supplied by the spool 646 enters the fabric 516 beside its right selvedge from which this yarn incorporates transversely into the fabric. The free end of this yarn is then still retained in the yarn holder 544. The weft yarn 644 passes through the contents, the yarn breaker, the heddle and the comb as previously described.
The weft thread 642 similarly passes through the contents, a thread breaker, a heddle and a comb and penetrates into the left edge of the fabric from where it is incorporated transversely to the latter while passing up to on its opposite side where it ends a little below the border at the place indicated in 901. The part of this yarn which extends across the fabric has been incorporated by threshing into the fabric and constitutes so now but a pick.
The weft thread 644, which has just been incorporated into the fabric by passing transversely to the loom, must now be subjected to the beating in order to constitute a new pick of the weft thread 642, so that, when the leaf moves forwards from the position shown in fig. 21 in order to subject to threshing a pick of the yarn 644, the pitch of the warp yarns closes, and the heddle corresponding to the weft yarn 642 falls to insert this yarn 642 into the protruding hook end of the bar 560 as represented by fig. 21.
As the leaf moves further forward, the blade 820 responsive to the operation of its cam 860 moves upward, and the taut weft yarn 644 slides over its sloping end. so that the cutting edge of the blade is placed above this weft thread (see fig. 10). As the flapper moves further forward, cam 860 turns more to drop the blade onto weft thread 644 and cut this thread at the location shown at 902 against a tooth of the neighboring comb but at some distance. distance inward from edge of fabric 516.
Before sectioning, the pitch has moreover closed sufficiently on the weft thread 644 to be able to hold it so that, following the sectioning, it does not move within the fabric.
As the leaf moves further forward, the receiver in which the thread holder 544 sits begins to move to the left away from the pitch, freeing the side of the templet 800 while at the same time releasing the free end of the short strand of weft yarn 644 which is held in the yarn holder relative to the fabric.
The receiver then begins to move to the right, approaching the pitch, while the leaf approaches its new front position and cooperates with the side of the templet to slide the cutter bar 560 and cut the wire 642 next to the edge of the fabric. The effective sectioning is ensured, preferably, when the leaf is in its position of maximum advance. It is in fact at this point of the movement that the clapper marks a pause before turning back and that the friction between the end of the cutter bar and the templet is reduced.
It should perhaps be noted that, as the leaf moves forward to its position of maximum advancement just mentioned, so that the weft thread 642 is stretched between the upper edge of the slot 803 and the spring 804 for its retention, the nozzle 808 slides in its groove made in the templet 800 to release the slot for this purpose due to the contact of the leaf with the stud 815 provided on the nozzle.
This is pushed backwards despite the tension of the counter spring 814.
As the weft yarn 642 is severed in the manner just shown, the incoming free end is secured in the front end of the yarn holder 544 together with the short strand of the weft yarn. 644 which was held in the left end of the wire holder 544 is released and pulled away through the suction tube 821.
The free end of the weft thread 642 is hand held by the slit 803 and the spring 804 some distance and to the left of the edge or edge of the fabric.
As the leaf 500 moves back, the pitch begins to open, and the air jet nozzle 808 itself begins to advance under the tension of the spring 814. In doing so, its end 812 shaped like a V pushes the free end of the weft thread 642 held by it out of the slot.
When the wire is almost completely out of this slot, a jet of air shoots out from the nozzle 810 thanks to the valve 896 controlled by its cam 892 and the roller 894 associated with it. This air jet forcibly introduces the free end of the wire 642 into the opening of the pitch towards the free end of the wire 644 at the place designated by 901 where it has been cut. The sectioning points 901 are preferably arranged so that two free ends are at the same distance from the edge or edge.
of the stuff. The air jet is maintained for a period of time sufficient for the pitch to close, in order to ensure that the free end subjected to this air jet of the weft thread 642 is well maintained by the closed pitch and does not risk no coming out of the fabric.
At the moment when the leaf 500 moves further backwards and when the pitch continues to open, the shuttle is driven transversely to the leaf by the hunting whip in order to act on the thread holder 544 and to entrain the weft thread 642 that it encloses until the receiver placed on the right side of the loom. The yarn carrier arrives at the right side of the loom at about the same time in the loom operating cycle that it was received on the left side of the loom, i.e. when the leaf moves towards the loom. 'before.
The operation which has just been described is repeated except that, in this case, it is the wire 642 which is cut by the knife and the wire 644 which is sectioned by the bar of the wire holder. It is by repeating these operations as they have just been described that the manufacture of the fabric occurs.
We have just described the operation of the loom when a single weft yarn is used on each side of the loom, but it is obvious that, in a variant, one could provide several yarns of different colors on each side of the loom provided that each of these wires passes through a separate stringer and is either supplied from a separate feed spool or similar wire source.
Each colored thread would, of course, pass through the fabric from one selvedge to the other and it would suffice, to introduce into this fabric a weft thread having such or such particular color desired, to operate the appropriate heddle in order to to drop the thread into the hooked end of the thread holder.
It can be added that, in the embodiment which is represented by FIGS. 1 to 25, an electrically actuated thread breaking mechanism is provided. But it is understood that, after a weft thread has been cut by the movement of the receiver against the templet and the leaf begins to move backwards, the weft thread takes slack and the breaker mechanism wire with electric operation that intervenes normally to stop the trade.
To avoid this, a suitably shaped cam is provided mounted on the actuating shaft of the loom in order to cut off the electrical circuit serving the electrical yarn breaker mechanism during the period when the weft yarn is floating when the beating is begins to move back after severing the weft thread.
It was found that the curved blade 646c shown in FIG. 3 is effective in taking up slack in the weft yarn as the flap moves backward to prevent unwanted operation of the yarn breaker mechanism. As the wire is pulled from the feed spool 646, the blade 646c is moved despite the load of a spring at its base. As the bat moves backward, the spring assumes its former state and takes up any slack in the thread to prevent the thread breaking mechanism from acting.
In addition, when we establish a border or selvedge by cutting the picks a little below but very close to the edge of the fabric as described above, and by introducing by a jet of air another weft thread towards the previous one also as described, an uneven selvage results if a relatively thick section weft yarn is employed. Indeed, two weft threads would be in a single step on the selvedge.
This can be avoided by keeping the free end of the weft thread which is incorporated by the air jet at the edge of the fabric until the thread carrier has reached the opposite side of the loom and is pulled back, then by releasing this same end of the weft thread and by introducing it by a jet of air in the same pitch as the thread which has just been passed through the fabric and which can be cut very close but a little below the edge of the fabric.
In this way, it is both the end of the pick which is cut off a little below but very close to the edge of the fabric, and the end of the weft thread which is introduced by the jet of air within the fabric which is in the same pitch. A worm system can be provided to maintain the nozzle in the position in which it is actuated by the forward movement of the leaf and which is released by a cam, in order to allow the rod of the nozzle to eject the strand. of weft thread thus retained out of the slit, when the thread carrier returns on itself as has been described.
This release device after locking is not shown. It should also be added that the arrival of vacuum, in other words the action of the vacuum which eliminates the small strands of weft thread after their sec tioning by the blade 820 must be disconnected when its action is not useful. otherwise, a strand of thread thus severed could enter such that the broken weft thread would be kept under tension and the thread breaking mechanism of the loom would not work.
This loom shown and described inserts and cuts the required lengths of weft yarn from feed sources placed some distance from the shuttle, and lends itself to the use of several kinds of weft yarns, their number not being limited only by the smooth layout that is employed.
In general, the described loom is designed such that the weft threads are fed from a source of continuous supply to a thread carrier, where the latter is held in a receiver and out of the shuttle, and it understands. members provided in the shuttle for transferring the thread holder through the warp threads and from one to the other of the two receivers placed on either side of the loom. The weft threads are incorporated into the fabric by the comb in the ordinary manner.
