<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>

<EMI ID=22.1>
<EMI ID=23.1>
<EMI ID=24.1>
<EMI ID=25.1>
48 commence son mouvement de rotation et de translation dans un plan incliné en direction du battant par rapport au plan du tissu formé. De façon plus précise (voir spécialement les fig. 1 et 3), l'aiguille à crochet 48 commence à se déplacer vers l'avant en direction du peigne 47 et vers le bas en restant tout d'abord au-dessus des fils de chaîne 13 puis en pénétrant dans la foule à une certaine distance de la ligne de serrage de la duite du tissu formé;

<EMI ID=44.1>
respectivement (voir fig.

"Method and device for folding the ends of
picks in the crowd of a hole made by a loom
without shuttle "<EMI ID = 1.1>
<EMI ID = 2.1>
weft in a fabric made by means of a shuttleless loom having a continuous weft feed mechanism in which the different weft threads to be woven and arriving from fixed spools mounted outside the fabric all remain attached to the edge of the fabric. same fabric and are not severed until they have been brought once more into the shed by introduction and withdrawal needles moving in opposite directions on the flap of the loom.
Methods are already known in the prior art for folding back or turning back in the shed the ends of the weft threads or picks which extend outside the shed and form a characteristic fringe, said methods essentially using mechanisms which are synchronized. , as regards their movement, with the flapper and the transport needles and move the hook needles hooking the ends of the weft threads to be folded back, but all these known methods cannot be used with a loom of the aforementioned type in in which all of the weft threads to be woven remain attached to the fabric and are introduced into the shed while the flapper moves.
These weft threads, which arrive from fixed spools and which remain attached to the edge of the fabric, in fact intertwine each other forming a tangle of threads in which also the severed ends of the selected weft threads to be woven remain entangled, which makes it difficult to release and hook or pick up said end, which operation is necessary for an efficient cusp of said end in the shed of the fabric.
Moreover, because the weft threads are brought into the shed while the leaf is moving, the devices serving to fold the ends of said weft threads back into the shed must move in a movement coordinated with that of the leaf and must be able to act on the weft threads which are also in motion:
The object of the present invention is to solve the

<EMI ID = 4.1>
method of folding back or turning back in the shed the two ends of a weft thread in a fabric made by means of a shuttleless loom having a continuous weft feed mechanism.
According to the present invention, the turning back in the shed of the ends of the weft threads is obtained in a different way on the two sides of the fabric. More precisely, on the side where the weft threads to be woven remain attached to the formed fabric, the severed ends of the introduced or picked weft threads are folded back into the same.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
introduced the next time, according to the pick repetition of the weaving pattern of the weft thread selection mechanism, so that a characteristic selvedge in the form of a "strap" is obtained, the length of which varies according to the repetition of the aforementioned pick of the weaving design of the weft yarn selection mechanism on the other side of the fabric, the ends of the introduced or picked weft yarns on the other hand are always folded back in the next shed and the folding is not dependent, therefore , the repeating picks of the weaving pattern of the weft yarn selection mechanism.
The method for folding in the shed of the fabric the ends of a weft thread is characterized, according to the present invention, by the fact that on the side of the fabric where the weft threads are fixed to the edge of this fabric, the severed ends of the weft yarn chosen are released from the entanglement of the other weft yarns and retained by a flexible and mobile pneumatic suction pipe of a device installed on the chest of the loom, this flexible pipe performing a rotational and translational movement in
a plane perpendicular to that of the fabric formed and parallel to the warp threads and said severed end is folded back into the shed, while the flap clamps the weft thread or pick in the fabric, by means of a hook needle of the aforementioned device who also moves next
a rotational and translational movement in a plane inclined towards the leaf relative to said plane of the fabric
<EMI ID = 6.1>
selected weft yarn brought out of the shed by the pulling needle is grasped and stretched by another pneumatic suction pipe mounted on the flapper and, when the weft yarn has been clamped in the fabric by a mechanism of mechanical clamping provided with pliers and that comprises a second device installed on the chest of the loom, this system performing a rotational and translational movement in a plane perpendicular to that of the fabric formed and parallel to the warp threads, and said thread end weft or pick is then cut in an appropriate manner by the scissors of the second aforementioned device, the excess part being sucked by said other flexible pneumatic suction pipe,
then it is grasped and folded back into the crowd following said shed by another hook needle of said second device which performs a movement symmetrical with respect to the movement of said hook needle of the first device.
The adoption, according to the invention, of a flexible and movable pneumatic suction pipe guarantees that the severed end of the weft thread will always remain well taut during all the turning back operations in the shed, which allows obtain a perfect selvedge, while the rotational and translational movement of this suction hose serves to move the latter forward to the sectioning area, upwards so that the hose slides against the already entangled mentioned of said sons
weft, so as to facilitate the release of the end of the pick to be gripped, and to bring the pipe as close as possible to said end of the pick in order to thereby increase the suction action of said pipe and , finally, backwards and downwards respectively to facilitate the hooking or picking of said pick end by the aforementioned hook needle and to follow the movement of the flapper so as to allow the comb to tighten the weft thread in the fabric. The adoption, also according to the present invention, of a mechanical clamping system provided with clamps moving in a rotational and translational movement in a plane perpendicular to that of the fabric formed and parallel to the threads of
<EMI ID = 7.1>
threading the end of the weft thread by the hook needle
and keeping said end taut so that it can be appropriately cut by the
aforementioned scissors, this cutting operation being necessary to equalize the length of the ends of the
pick or weft thread which never have the same length due to the slipping of the weft threads during their transfer, in the center of the shed, from the introduction needle to the withdrawal needle and due to a possible difference
dimensions of the weft threads introduced. Said movement
of rotation and translation in an inclined plane of the hook needles ultimately serves to move the hook needles forward, that is to say towards the comb, and downwards so that it enters the shed at a certain distance from the pick clamping line
fabric to prevent said hook needle from
out of the crowd, do not cut the weft thread and enter
in the formed fabric, the aforementioned movement also serving to make the hook needle exit laterally from
said crowd and move it back and then bring it
back to its starting position so as to facilitate the operation of hooking or picking the end of the
picking in cooperation with the movements already mentioned
flexible and mobile pneumatic suction hose and mechanical clamping system provided with clamps respectively.
According to an embodiment of the present invention,
the mechanism imparting to the aforementioned flexible and mobile pneumatic suction pipe the rotational and translational movement in a plane perpendicular to that of the fabric formed 'and parallel to the warp threads comprises a lever
hollow supporting at one of its ends the mobile pneumatic suction pipe, and articulated, at its other end,
to a cam actuated drive lever, a second L-shaped drive lever actuated by
a cam being connected to said hollow lever by means of a sliding block which is hinged to one end of the L-shaped drive lever and can slide inside
of the slot of said hollow lever, and the contact between the aforementioned drive levers and the corresponding cams
<EMI ID = 8.1> According to another embodiment of the present invention, the mechanism imparting to the mechanical clamping system provided with grippers the aforementioned movement of rotation and translation in a plane perpendicular to that of the fabric formed and parallel to the threads of chain is also constituted by a hollow lever supporting, at one of its ends, the said mechanical clamping system provided with pliers and articulated, at its other end, to a drive lever actuated by a cam, a second drive lever having the shape of an L and actuated by a cam being connected to said hollow lever by means of a sliding block which is articulated

According to yet another embodiment of the invention, the mechanism communicating to each of said hook needles the precise rotational and translational movement.

of the fabric formed is constituted by an operating rod supporting, at one end thereof, said adjustable hook needle 'with respect to its position in the direction of said rod which is slidably supported in a downwardly inclined direction and oriented towards le'omb by a horizontal lever having substantially the shape of a T and articulated! the end of its central branch or leg, said rod being connected to a second horizontal lever articulated at its end opposite the T-shaped lever by means of a block which is fixed to said rod and which penetrates into a groove of the 'other end of the horizontal lever, the aforementioned two-horizontal levers each being actuated, by means of a connecting rod, by an angled drive lever acting in a vertical plane and moved by a conjugate cam.

As can be seen clearly in fig. 1, the twisting of the ends of the picks in the shed is obtained, according to the present invention, in a different way on the two sides of the fabric. On the left side of the fabric where the weft threads to be woven remain attached to the edge of the fabric, the ends 14a, 15a and 16a of the weft threads are drawn back into the same shed where the corresponding weft threads or picks 14, 15, 16 are introduced the next time, depending on the repetition of picks in the design or weaving pattern of the weft yarn selection mechanism, so that characteristic selvages in the shape of "straps!" are formed. <EMI ID = 19.1>
weft in the shed on the left side of the fabric is obtained by means of the device 1 comprising a box 17 (see fig. 1 to 7) which is rigidly mounted on the left side of the chest piece 18 of the loom and houses the mechanisms operating the knives 20 and 34, the suction pipe 45 and the hook needle 48, respectively. On the aforementioned left side of the fabric, the weft threads to be woven and arriving from the fixed spools 5 all remain attached to the edge of said fabric as a result of their passage through a suitable opening between the two knives 20 and 34. When a thread of frame 14 must be introduced, this thread is presented by <EMI ID = 20.1>
described in Italian patent n [deg.] 806.155, ahead of the treble \) - <EMI ID = 21.1>
-the chain while the lower knife 20 is raised. As the weft thread 14 is still attached to the edge of the formed fabric, this thread is therefore forced to turn around an ear 19 (see especially Figs. 1 and 4) of the lower knife 20 which, because it is mounted on a lever 21 rotating around an axis 22, has been raised. The movement of the knife 20, and therefore of the lever 21 is communicated by an axis 23 which can slide in a groove 24 of the lever 21 and which is fixed to an angled lever 25 pivoting on the axis 26 supported by the box 17 The displacement printed on the angled lever 25 is communicated, itself,
by a lever 28 which is articulated to an axis 29 supported by
the box 17 and which is connected to the lever 25 by means of an adjustable rod 27. On the lever 28, a roller 30 has then been mounted which is pressed by a spring 39 against the drive cam 31 keyed on a shaft 32 driven by the shaft 33 coming out of the drive device 4.
The weft thread 14 is cut at the moment when the lower knife 20 and the upper knife 34 cross which, mounted on an angled lever 35 rotating about said axis 22, is lowered. The movement imprinted on the upper knife 34
and, therefore, to the angled lever 35 is communicated by a lever 36 which pivots on a pin 37 supported by the box 17 and which is connected to the lever 35 by means of an adjustable link 38. The lever 36 also supports a roller 40 which is pressed by a spring 41 against a drive cam 42 keyed on a shaft 43 driven by the shaft 33 coming out of the drive device 4. When the weft thread 14 has been cut, the end 14a of the weft protrudes from the left edge of the fabric formed, this end having to be turned back into the shed formed by the warp threads 13 and into which the weft thread 14 must be introduced, drawn to the center of the shed by the needle of introduction 8 then, after the exchange, through the withdrawal needle 9.
The position of the ear 19 of the lower knife 20, with respect to the first warp thread 44 on the left side of the fabric, determines the length of the severed end 14a to be turned back into the shed and, therefore, the length of the severed end 14a. -width of the formed edge.
<EMI ID = 22.1>
and is retained outside the shed by a movable pneumatic pipe 45 connected to the pneumatic system 3 by means of a pipe 46. The pipe 45, for the time necessary to introduce the weft thread 14 into the shed and to tighten with the comb 47 said weft yarn against the warp of the fabric performs a rotational and translational movement in a plane perpendicular to that of the fabric formed and parallel to the weft yarns 13. This rotational and translational movement of the flexible hoses, together with the rotational and translational movement of the hook needle 48 in a plane inclined with respect to said plane of the formed fabric facilitates the picking of the end 14a of the weft threads by the hook needle 48. In FIG. 5, there is shown the complete movement of the suction pipe 45, movement which is the result of the simple movements
<EMI ID = 23.1>
are printed to the suction pipe 45 by a lever 49
(see fig. 3 and 5) which supports at one of its hollow ends, the pipe 45 and which is slidably supported by a sliding block which can slide inside the buttonhole 51 of said lever and is connected at its end, by means of an axis 54 to a drive lever 52 which pivots about an axis 53 supported by the box 17 and supports a roller 55 pressed by a spring 56 against a drive cam 57 keyed on the shaft 32 already mentioned and driven by the drive shaft 33. The movements according to
<EMI ID = 24.1>
suction 45 by said lever 49 actuated by a drive lever 58 which has the shape of an L and which pivots about said axis 29 at one of its ends and which is articulated, at its other end, to said sliding block 50 and is actuated by a drive cam 61 keyed on the shaft 32, the contact between the lever and the cam being provided by a roller 59 and a spring 60. Thanks to the forward movements
<EMI ID = 25.1>
suction pipe 45 is brought into contact, in the area where the end 14a of the weft thread has been severed, with said tangle of weft threads 6 so as to "thread" against said weft threads and to facilitate in this way the opening of said tangle and, consequently, the release of the end 14a of the weft thread, which end sometimes gets tangled according to the order of presentation of the various weft threads, and as close as possible to this end 14a of the weft thread so as to increase its suction action and to ensure a more secure grip and traction on said end.
When the suction hose has performed the above movements forwards and upwards, the hook needle
48 begins its rotational and translational movement in a plane inclined towards the leaf relative to the plane of the formed fabric. More precisely (see especially Figs. 1 and 3), the hook needle 48 begins to move forward in the direction of the comb 47 and downwards, remaining first of all above the threads. chain 13 then by entering the shed at a certain distance from the tightening line of the pick of the fabric formed;
the needle then turns counterclockwise so that its hook end portion 63 exits laterally from the shed and it finally returns slightly towards the cover 62 of the templet of the loom, so that it describes a movement similar to that shown in thicker lines
64 in fig. 3.
then, after having grasped or picked up the end 14a of the weft thread to be folded up, the hook needle 48 returns to its starting position by performing the movement shown by the line 65 in FIG. 3, that is to say re-enters the shed whose weft threads 13 are being brought together, then leaves the upper threads of the same shed. In this way, the end 14a of the weft thread exits the hook needle 63 and remains inserted between the warp threads when the comb 47 presses the weft thread 14.
The device for printing the aforementioned movements on the needle 48 to the hook comprises a control rod 66
(see fig. 1, 3, 6 and 7) at one end of which.

down in the direction of the comb-47 (see fig, 7) and can only slide in the direction 72 (see fig. 3) under the effect of a horizontal lever 78 having substantially the shape of a T and articulated at the end of its central leg or branch on the axis 79 supported by the box 17. The horizontal lever 78 and, consequently, the hook needle 48 can then rotate around the axis 79 in an arc of a circle 80 (see fig. 3), this movement being transmitted to the lever 78 by a conjugate cam 85 (see especially fig. 7) which is keyed on the shaft 82 already mentioned and acts on the rollers 83 and 84 of a elbow lever 81 pivoting vertically on the shaft 53 already mentioned and connected to said horizontal lever 78 by means of an adjustable rod 82.
The aforementioned sliding allowed in the direction 72 to the control rod 66 is on the other hand obtained by means of the horizontal lever 70 which pivots at one of its ends on the axis 71 supported by the box 17 and having, at its other end, a groove 69 in which slides a block 68 fixed to said control rod 66, the horizontal lever <EMI ID = 29.1>
of a conjugate cam 77 (see especially fig. 6) keyed on the already mentioned shaft 32 - and acting on the rollers
75 and 76 of an angled lever 73 which is itself supported vertically by being keyed on the shaft 53 and is connected to said horizontal lever 70 by means of an adjustable link
74.
It should be remembered that when the hook needle 48 performs the movements indicated by the lines
64 and 65 in fig. 3, the suction pipe 45 performs the movements already mentioned downwards and backwards.
<EMI ID = 30.1>
facilitates the hooking of the end 14a of the weft thread by the hooked needle 48 and allows it to be kept tight at all times during the whole of the turning or folding operation and consequently to obtain a selvage perfect. Then, the suction pipe 45 returns to its starting position by performing the vector movement FF 'in order to leave the area where the fabric is woven to allow the comb 47 to press the weft thread.
<EMI ID = 31.1>
15b, 16b are on the other hand, as already mentioned, always

box 86 (see fig. 1 and 8 to 13) which is rigidly fixed on the right side of the breastplate 18 of the loom and houses the mechanism actuating the mechanical blocking system 89 provided with pliers, scissors 109 and the needle. hook
90.
When a weft thread, for example weft thread 15,
has been transported by the return needle 9 outside the shed formed by the warp threads 13 (see fig. 1), said weft thread is released from said return needle and its end 15b protruding from the edge of the fabric which coincides with the last weft thread 87 is sucked and drawn by the suction hose 88 connected to the pneumatic suction system.
<EMI ID = 34.1>
The pipe 88 retains the end 15b of the weft thread until the introduced weft thread 15 has been pressed by the comb 47 when the clamping system intervenes

performs a rotational and translational movement in a plane perpendicular to that of the fabric formed and parallel to the warp threads 13, whereby the aforementioned clamping system grasps the end 15b of the weft thread and facilitates the picking of said end by the hook needle 90 which must introduce it into the newly formed shed.

The movements
<EMI ID = 37.1>
printed to the clamping system 89 by said lever 91 with a hollow end actuated by a drive lever 101 which has the shape of an L and which pivots on the axis 102 and whose other end is articulated to the sliding block 92 and is driven by a drive cam 105 keyed onto the already mentioned shaft 100, the contact between the lever and the cam being provided by a roller 103 and a spring 104. The clamping system 89 is open in its rest position, that is, the gripper elements 123 and 124 are spaced apart from each other, because the head roller 106 is supported by a support finger 107 projecting horizontally from the box 86 of the device 2 d 'in an adjustable manner, this finger counteracting the action of the spring 108 tending to hold the clamp elements 123 and 124 against each other.
When the comb 47 has clamped the weft thread 15 in the corresponding shed, the clamping system 89 begins to

the end 15b of the weft thread then downwards following the
<EMI ID = 39.1>
support 107 and the spring 108 can, therefore, exert its action and close the clamp by bringing the elements together
123 and 124 of this clamp so as to exert a grip on the end 15b of the weft thread. At the same time, the scissors 109 cut off the excess part of the end
15b of the weft thread, part which is sucked by the suction pipe 88 and transported through the flexible pipe 110 to the container 111 (see fig. 1).
The movement of the movable blades 113 of the scissors 109
(see especially fig. 13) is obtained by means of the lever
112 connected, via an adjustable rod 116,
<EMI ID = 40.1> <EMI ID = 41.1>
contact between the cam and the angled lever being ensured by a
<EMI ID = 42.1>
In fig. 9, a thick line 121 and a thin line 122 represent the entire movement of the hook needle 90. This movement and the mechanisms shown in FIGS. 10 and 11 which communicate this movement are symmetrically equal to the movement shown in <EMI ID = 43.1> as to the corresponding mechanism shown in figs. 6 and 7, respectively, and therefore, it is not necessary to describe them in more detail.
While the hook needles 90 perform the above-mentioned movement along lines 121 and 122 during the introduction of a new weft thread 14 into the next shed, the clamping system 89 moves towards
<EMI ID = 44.1>
respectively (see Fig. 12), so, as already mentioned, the picking of the end 15b of the weft thread by the hook needle 90 is then very easy. Then, the clamping system 89, after the end 15b which is to be turned back into the shed has been gripped by the hook needle 90, which folds it back into the next shed of the new weft thread 14, returns to its position. starting by executing the movement along the vector MM '. The stone'
106 then comes to rest on the support finger 107 and the clamping system 89 is again in the open state of rest, that is to say ready for the next clamping of a new end of the pick before be folded into the chain.
It is understood that the foregoing description has been given for purely illustrative and non-limiting purposes only and that variants or modifications can be made to it without thereby departing from the general scope of the present invention as it is. defined in the appended claims.
