Abstract

Automatic wear compensating means for a brake, clutch, or other mechanism operated hydraulically by a piston and cylinder device, comprises a deformable member within the cylinder which is provided with one or more lips adapted to operate as a one-way valve or valves, allowing flow in the direction to operate the brake or other mechanism but not in the release direction, movement in the latter direction being confined to the permitted deformation of the lip or lips. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 4, deformable member 6 is anchored by a circlip 7 in a cylinder 1 containing brake actuating pistons 2 provided with cups 3. Member 6 comprises two circular lips 8 enclosing an annular space with which an inlet port 4 communicates, the usual bleed port being connected by diverging passages to the spaces between the lips and the cups 3. During the applying movement fluid supplied to the inlet port 4 can pass the lips but release movement is limited by the permitted deformation of lips 8 to the chain-line position, Fig. 4, bevels 8a preventing port 4 from being covered. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, one piston cup 3a is provided with a lip 7a enclosing an annular space communicating with an offset inlet port 4a, the bleed port being offset to the opposite side of the centre of the cylinder.
