Abstract

1453029 Piston packing; friction clutches AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 12 Oct 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 47409/72 Headings F2T and F2C A piston 21 is recessed to receive a sealing ring 26 on the pressure side, the ring being expanded against the cylinder wall and piston by the pressure and retained in the recess during the return stroke, and the recess including a frusto-conical portion 27A facilitating assembly. The piston is shown applied to operation of a plate clutch having axially slidable plates 12, 13, 15, 16, in an automatic gearbox and acts on the plate 15 through a spring disc 20, or directly, Fig. 2 (not shown). Pressure is supplied through a passage 23 to cause the clutch to connect members 10, 11, a spring 30 returning the piston to release the clutch. The ring 26 and piston 21 may be fitted separately into the annular bore, thus obviating damage of the ring by the circlip groove 29.
