Abstract

819,222. Hydraulic brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Jan. 15, 1957 [May 4, 1956], No. 1478/57. Class 103 (1). In order to provide automatic adjustment of the friction members in a disc brake by hydraulic means, an apparatus is provided comprising large and small diametered tandem cylinders, pistons operating in tandem therein, valve means to introduce fluid into the small cylinder to effect brake clearance adjustment, and means associated with the valve means to introduce fluid under pressure through the large cylinder to apply the adjusted brake friction members. In the spot-type disc brake illustrated, a number of piston and cylinder mechanisms 11 is provided in a fixed arcuate support 7 extending over a portion of the periphery of a rotatable axially movable brake disc 2. Adjacent one of the piston and cylinder mechanisms 11 is a transfer cylinder mechanism comprising a large and small diametered cylinder 26 housing a large and small diametered piston 32 controlled by a pressure control valve 43 between a pressure supply line 42 and the cylinder 26. In operation, fluid under pressure from a manually controlled pressure source is admitted to manifold 70. Plunger 62 of pressure-controlled valve 43 is in the normal position shown in Fig. 3 and the fluid flows through the passages 65, 66, 56, 57 in valve 43 to duct 39 and advances piston 32 should clearance exist between friction members and the brake disc. This displaces a larger amount of fluid from the large end of the transfer cylinder to the piston and cylinder mechanisms 11 via ducts 41 taking up brake clearance. As pressure increases in manifold 70, plunger 62 is moved to its second position closing of duct 57 and sealing the liquid between smaller end of piston 32 and the fixed head of the cylinder 26. At the same time fluid under pressure is admitted to duct 61 by uncovering of that duct by the plunger 62 which is forced upwardly against the force of the spring 64 and fluid is supplied through duct 61 to the larger end of the transfer cylinder and the piston and cylinder mechanism 11. When the pressure supply is released, plunger 62 is forced back by spring 64 closing off duct 60 and opening space 56 to the bore 65. A cup gasket 71 will not now permit direct return to the duct 69 from bore 65 and duct 74 and by-pass valve 75 permit regulated slow release of pressure about the gasket 71.
