Abstract

1,155,951. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 7 July, 1966 [14 July, 1965], No. 29772/65. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the kind comprising a pair of pads movable towards an axially fixed disc by a piston and cylinder actuator, alternative mechanical applying means is in the form of a strut arranged to pass with clearance through an opening in the closed end of the cylinder and enter into a space sealed from an annular hydraulic chamber to be coaxially supported by the piston, a lever also being carried by the cylinder end and acting on the external end of the strut, the arrangement being such that the strut is coaxially located in the cylinder independently of the opening. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the strut 48 passes through a fibre ring 54 in a bore of annular piston 32 to act directly on the backing plate 18 of pad 16, lever 65 acting on the external end of the strut through a ball 60 engaging the boss of a ratchet wheel 52 by which rotation of externally threaded portion 50 of the strut can be effected for adjustment purposes. The piston has an axially extending flange 38 received in a bore of a flanged closure member 36 for cylinder bore 30 of housing 11. Seals 40, 44 are provided to isolate a fluid chamber 46 from the interior of the piston in which the strut has clearance. A spring 64 effects return movement of the strut following a brake application, the piston 32 being movable independently on supply of hydraulic fluid to chamber 46. Housing 11 pivots at 12 during brake application so that both pads 16, 20 are applied. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the front end of the piston 70 is closed and an extension piece 74 sealingly slidable in a bore of closure member 76 is retained within the piston by a ring 72. The strut engages a hemispherical surface formed within the extension piece. In both embodiments the housing may be fixed and provide a pair of cylinders each having a piston for applying a respective pad to the disc. The ratchet wheel on the externally threaded strut portion 86 may be engaged by a pawl (96, Fig. 5, not shown) which is carried by a stirrup (98) axially movable with the strut, the pawl being pivoted by co-operating with a rod (104) secured to the closure member, so that automatic wear adjustment is effected. A similar arrangement may be applied to the construction of Fig. 1.
