Abstract

849,147. Hydraulic brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. April 6, 1959 [May 13, 1958], No. 15324/58. Class 103 (1). In a master cylinder of the kind in which a valve element is provided in association with the master cylinder piston to allow liquid to flow past the latter during its return stroke and maintain the system to which the master cylinder is connected full of liquid even though the master cylinder piston may return more rapidly than the pistons in the wheel brake cylinders or cylinder, the piston 10 is formed with passages 19, 21 connecting an opening in its front face to an annular space 16 surrounding the rear part of the piston and a valve element 25 is provided to close the passage, the valve element being carried by a member 24 which is free to slide to a limited extent on a tubular extension 22 projecting from the front face of the piston head 11, and which has friction contact through V-shaped outwardly diverging limbs 29 of a sealing ring 28 within the cylinder walls 14 so that the member 24 tends to lag behind the piston 10 during movement of the latter. In operation, when the master cylinder piston 10 is applied the piston is advanced in the cylinder and the V-shaped sealing ring 28 on the member 24 is subjected to a friction drag due to its engagement with the wall 14 of the cylinder which causes the valve element 25 to be pressed against the front face of the piston head 11 to close the axial passage 19 and prevent escape of liquid through passages 19 and 21 to the reservoir (not shown) pressure is therefore built up in the master cylinder and itself tends to keep the valve element 25 firmly against the face of the piston head 11. When the piston 10 is allowed to return, the frictional drag on the sealing ring 28 of the member 24 tends to cause the latter to move away from the face of the piston head 11 and open the axial passage 19, so that at soon as the pressure in the cylinder drops sufficiently, the passages 19 and 21 in the pistons are opened, and free flow of liquid between the cylinder and the reservoir can take place through port 17.
