Definitions
- the invention also describes the method of regeneration of these Nb-containing catalysts in the oxidizing and non-ox ⁇ dierenden media 200 0 C to 600 0 C. State of the art
- Nb-containing materials have shown remarkable activity in heterogeneously catalyzed processes, including for the synthesis of fine chemicals. (Chem. Rev., 99 (1999) 3603-3624, Cat. Today 8 (1990) 1).
- Patent (US 5618512) further states that niobium-containing zeolites are useful for the oxidation of hydrocarbons such as olefins.
- the present invention describes the production of lactams such as ⁇ -caprolactam, ⁇ -laurolactam or carboxylic acid amides such as acetamidophenol and acetanilide by Beckmann rearrangement of the corresponding oximes such as Cyclohexanonoxim or Cyclododecanonoxim or 4-Hydroxyacetophenonoxim or Benzophenonoxime preferably in the gas phase but also in the liquid phase in the presence of Nb-containing catalysts, wherein the Nb is applied to various inorganic and organic support materials such as SiO 2 , SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 and ZrO 2 . Moreover, the invention describes the regeneration of such catalysts.
- ⁇ -caprolactam and ⁇ -laurolactam are important monomers for the production of polyamides such as nylon-6 and nylon 12.
- ⁇ -caprolactam is replaced by a Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime in the presence of acidic media such as fuming sulfuric acid or oleum ( US Pat. Nos. 4,268,440 and 5,304,443).
- acidic media such as fuming sulfuric acid or oleum
- the neutralization of the reaction mixture with ammonia leads to disadvantageous and polluting formation of large quantities of ammonium sulfate. Further disadvantages are corrosion, toxicity and possibly other by-products such as cyanopentene, aniline and cyclohexanone. The same applies to the production of ⁇ -laurolactam.
- the above processes can be carried out with replacement of the homogeneous sulfuric acid by Beckmann rearrangement in the gas phase with solid acidic catalysts.
- the solid acid catalysts in the gas-phase rearrangement include boric acid catalysts (JP-A-53-37686, JP-A-46-12125), silica-alumina catalysts (British Patent No. 881927), solid phosphoric acid Catalysts (British Patent No. 881956, US 4359421), mixed oxide catalysts (Dongsen Mao et al, Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical 240 (2005) 164-171) and zeolite catalysts (G.
- US Pat. No. 4,767,857 describes the preparation of ⁇ -caprolactam by heating 6-aminocaproic acid ester.
- US Pat. No. 4,963,672 has shown that, for the production of ⁇ -caprolactam, first 5-formylvalerate is hydrolyzed with a catalyst and water to give 5-formylvaleric acid. Thereafter, the 5-formylvaleric acid is reacted with ammonia, hydrogen, solvent and hydrogenation catalysts under an atmospheric pressure to give 6-aminocaproic acid. After catalyst removal and removal of the ammonia, the remaining solution is heated and converted to ⁇ -caprolactam.
- ⁇ -caprolactam can also be synthesized from natural products such as L-lysine, as a starting material.
- This is an L-lysine salt in one Solvents, such as alcohol, used for the production of ⁇ -amino- ⁇ -caprolactam. Subsequent deamination produces ⁇ -caprolactam.
- Beckmann rearrangement in the gas phase from cyclohexanone oxime to ⁇ -caprolactam can be carried out using solid catalysts such as beta zeolite, Y zeolite, mordenite, and in particular zeolites of MFI structure. ,
- beta, Y, mordenite and MFI zeolites in the H form or doped with rare earth metals or transition metals deactivate very rapidly by oligomer and polymer formation.
- other by-products such as 5-cyanopent-1-ene, cyclohexanone and aniline are increasingly being formed on these catalysts (US Pat. No. 5,531,595, US Pat. No. 5,354,859).
- the catalyst is regenerated at a higher temperature. This will be in Presence of oxidative gases such as oxygen removes carbon compounds such as oligomers and polymers from the active sites of the catalyst.
- Patents disclose that the Beckmann rearrangement in the gas phase on boron-containing zeolites, e.g. B-MFI zeolite, have a high conversion of cyclohexanone oxime and ⁇ -caprolactam selectivity in the fluidized bed reactor (G. Dahlhoff, et al., Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis, 139 (2001) 335-342, G. Heitmann et al, Journal of Catalysis 194 (2000) 122-129, US-6531595).
- boron-containing zeolites e.g. B-MFI zeolite
- ⁇ -laurolactam can be prepared on zeolitic heterogeneous catalysts by Beckmann rearrangement of Cyclododekanonoxim in the gas phase. Such a process is described in PCT / FR2006 / 001399. In this process, similar problems occur as in the production of ⁇ -caprolactam from cyclohexanone oxime by Beckmann rearrangement.
- Patent EP 0086543 and US-4472516 describe the method for improving the life of the B-MFI catalyst by the addition of Na ions. However, only a selectivity for ⁇ -caprolactam of 58% is found. The lifetime of the Na ion-treated catalyst is about 15 hours, about 5 times longer than that of untreated B-MFI zeolites. However, the formation of the by-product 5-cyanopent-1-ene, which is easily oligomerized and polymerized, is greatly promoted, and the result is thus unsatisfactory.
- the objectives of research in this area are to overcome these disadvantages by providing a process, for example for the production of ⁇ -caprolactam from cyclohexanone oxime by Beckmann rearrangement, to develop cheaper catalysts than the expensive zeolite catalysts used hitherto, which in addition are more robust are and allow a longer use before a regeneration.
- Paracetamol was first synthesized by Morse in 1878 by the reduction of p-nitrophenol with tin in glacial acetic acid. Many preparative methods have since been described, especially the acetylation of p-aminophenol with acetic anhydride, but other routes have been discovered and commercialized.
- the first step is to react A-hydroxyacetophenone with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to form 4-hydroxyacetophenone oxime.
- the second step is the Beckmann rearrangement of A-hydroxyacetophenone oxime to paracetamol with the aid of an acidic homogeneous catalyst such as fuming sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, trifluoroacetic acid, methanesulfonic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid or thionyl chloride in liquid sulfur dioxide.
- an acidic homogeneous catalyst such as fuming sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, trifluoroacetic acid, methanesulfonic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid or thionyl chloride in liquid sulfur dioxide.
- Nb-containing catalysts on support material also show excellent catalytic performance for Beckmann rearrangement, for example in the gas phase and provide very high selectivity at conversions of greater than 95%.
- the lifetime of such catalysts is surprisingly long enough for commercialization in fixed bed reactors and the process technology of an expensive fluidized bed reactor can be avoided with continuous catalyst regeneration in a second fluidized bed.
- the Beckmann rearrangement is preferably carried out in the gas phase but also in the liquid phase on Nb impregnated amorphous materials with high surface area and low acid strength.
- These catalysts show a constant activity, for example based on the cyclohexanone oxime reaction and on the extremely high selectivity to ⁇ -caprolactam.

By dissolving a Nb salt in water, impregnation on the support material and spun off the excess water on a rotary evaporator, ii.) By impregnation after the "incipient wetness" - method iii) by ion exchange iv) but also through blending of the niobium compound with the support material followed by drying and calcination at the application of the Nb -... component usually includes a drying between 80 ° C and 160 0 C, and then a calcination at 300 0 C to 750 0 C, preferably at 500 0 C to 600 0 C.

- polar and / or non-polar solvents such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, butanol, cyclohexanol, acetonitrile, xylenes, toluene or benzene and used as a solution.
- An inert solvent promotes the transport of the oxime to the reactive centers of the catalyst and also facilitates the desorption of the products from the catalyst surface.
- water and steam is of great advantage in carrying out these reactions.
- carrier gases can be used.
- the function of the carrier gas is the displacement of the reaction products and unreacted oxime from the catalyst surface.

- oxidative gas such as air
- the advantage of catalyzer regeneration in the presence of a non-oxidizing gas is that heat is not released by the oxidation of organic deposits on the catalyst in this method, whereby detrimental effects on the catalyst as in the oxidative regeneration can not occur.
- the Beckmann rearrangement and the catalyzer regeneration can be performed in parallel in two or more, for example 4 fixed bed reactors. These fixed bed reactors are operated in parallel in constant alternation between reaction and regeneration.
- the inventive Beckmann rearrangement of the oximes on the novel Nb-containing heterogeneous catalysts can also be carried out in the liquid phase.

- the atomic ratio Si / M is 16 or more, preferably 50 or more.
- the main reason for this high activity of the catalysts according to the invention lies in the large surface area of the support materials and in a large number of acid sites which have a very weak to medium strength of acidity. These acidic centers are well distributed on the catalyst surface. The very weakly acidic to slightly acidic centers are very favorable for the Beckmann rearrangement in the gas phase.

- a wire prevented the discharge of catalyst particles from the reactor.
- Cyclohexanone oxime was mixed with the solvent and any additional component in a container and fed via a Telabpumpe in the evaporator. There, the educt mixture was mixed with the N 2 and pumped in gaseous form into the reactor.
- the reactor effluent was collected in a cryostat, cooled with dry ice and isopropanol solution.
- the collected products were analyzed by gas chromatography and the conversion and selectivity determined using an internal standard (methyl undeconate).
- Examples 6 - 9 (Table 1) show the results obtained with catalysts A-D after a reaction time of 4 h.
- Niobium (V) chloride is dissolved in isopropanol (about 50 ml. For 10 g of silica). This takes about 1-2 hours. The powdered silica is stirred into this mixture for 3 hours at room temperature. Isopropanol is slowly evaporated after 3 hours. The catalyst is then calcined at 550 0 C for 8 hours.

-881956, US-4359421), Mischoxid-Katalysatoren (Dongsen Mao et.al, Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical 240 (2005) 164-171) und Zeolith Katalysatoren (G. Heitmann etal, Applied Catalysis A: General, 185 (1999) 99-108 und J. Catalysis, 186 (1999) 12-19 , G. Dahlhoff et al. Catal. Rev.-Sci.

Beispiel-l: Katalysator A
