Definitions
- the present invention relates to a housing for a component of an exhaust system, according to the preamble of claim 1.
- Such housings are in practical use and are used for different components of the exhaust system, for example for catalysts, diesel particulate filters and in particular for silencers.
- FIG. 1 shows by way of example a muffler 1 with a housing 10 according to the prior art.
- the housing 10 includes a first half-shell 12 and an overlying second half-shell, which is not shown in the figure.
- an inner tube 14 is arranged, which is surrounded in some applications by an insulating mat 16 and in which an exhaust-carrying pipe can be partially introduced.
- the connection of the exhaust-carrying pipe to the housing 10 via an opening 18 which is disposed in the housing 10 in the region of a front side S.
- the two half shells have two longitudinal edge portions 20, e.g. are connected by crimping or welding together. This connection of the two half shells is carried out by machine along the longitudinal edges of the two edge sections 20.
- the edge portions 20 have over their entire length a substantially uniform width of about 8 to 10 mm (in the case of a welded housing). When folded housings, the edge portion is usually made wider.
- a disadvantage of the described housing 10 according to the prior art is that the housing 10 in the region of the opening 18 in the horizontal direction (ie along the edge portions 20) has a significantly greater rigidity as in the vertical direction (perpendicular to the plane of the edge portions 20). This results in a jump in stiffness in this area, which leads to a limited fatigue strength under bending stress and thus to a shortened durability of the housing.
- connection of the two half-shells along the longitudinal sides L of the housing 10 can only be carried out by machine up to a point P without difficulty.
- the two machine hard to reach frontal edges X of the edge portions 20 of the half-shells must be re-welded under certain circumstances manually to completely close the housing 10.
- Such a production step is comparatively complicated and therefore expensive.
- the FR 2 617 903 A1 and the US 5,280,142 A show silencer with a housing similar to that of FIG. 1 ,
- the housing in the US document additionally has tabs for fastening a heat shield in the area of the edge sections.
- a generic housing wherein the muffler described is not made as usual from sheet metal, but comprises two half shells made of plastic, in particular of glass fiber reinforced polyester or epoxy resin. These two half-shells have edge portions which bear against one another in the assembled state of the muffler. The edge portions adjoin recesses of the half-shells, wherein the width of the edge portions is reduced to the recesses.
- the EP 0 563 843 A1 describes a method for producing a muffler for motor vehicles, in which the half-shells of the muffler and connected exhaust pipes are attached without weld joint to each other.
- the exhaust pipes are clamped in the muffler and the half shells made of sheet metal by folding connected to each other.
- the FR 2 854 649 A1 shows a muffler, which is not composed of two half-shells, which are connected to one another via edge portions, but has a plurality of axially successively arranged pipe segments.
- the edge segments are pot-shaped, with a bottom having connections for exhaust pipes.
- the object of the present invention is therefore to provide a housing for a component of an exhaust system, are avoided in the stiffness jumps in the region of an opening which serves to attach an exhaust pipe, and which is also easy to produce.
- the edge portions expire at the opening and the width of the edge portions is reduced to the opening.
- the stiffness in the horizontal direction can be significantly reduced and thus approach the stiffness in the vertical direction.
- an increase in the fatigue strength of the housing in the region of the opening by about 30 percent and thus a significantly improved durability is achieved, which is comparable to the durability of a housing having an additional bracing in the region of the opening.
- in the embodiment of the invention usually eliminates the need for manual rewelding.
- the width of the edge sections in the area of the opening can be about half the normal width of the edge sections, advantageously about one third of the normal width.
- At least one tube is attached to the housing according to the invention, which is welded to the housing by means of a weld seam, wherein the width of the edge sections in the area of the opening is at most equal to the height of the weld seam.
- a weld seam such an embodiment not only achieves the already described improved fatigue life, but it can also be dispensed with an expensive and expensive manual rewelding of the frontal edges of the edge portions.
- the half-shells are thus connected to one another at the front end of the housing exclusively by the weld seam required anyway for the attachment of the exhaust gas-carrying pipe, whereby a complete closing of the housing is realized in a simple, cost-effective and time-saving manner.
- the housing according to the invention is less susceptible to cracking in the region of the weld.
- a particularly favorable ratio of horizontal to vertical rigidity which leads to an optimal fatigue strength of the housing in the region of the opening, results when the edge portions with the central axis of the tube form an angle of about 30 °.
- FIG. 2 shows an inventive housing 10 of a muffler 1, the in FIG. 1 Replaced illustrated housing 10 according to the prior art.
- corresponding components carry the same reference numerals, and it will be discussed below only on the differences of the housing 10 according to the invention to the prior art.
- FIG. 2 it can be seen run in the housing 10, the edge portions 20 at the opening 18, and the width of the edge portions 20 is reduced to the opening 18 out.
- the width of the edge portions 20 is selected in this area so that it is on the front side S about half, better one third of the normal width of the edge portions, that is about 2 to 4 mm.
- a further advantage of the housing 10 according to the invention becomes apparent when an exhaust-carrying pipe 22 is attached to the housing 10 and is welded to the housing 10 by means of a weld seam 24 (FIG. FIG. 3 ).
- the weld 24 has, as well as the opening 18, substantially the shape of the pipe cross-section. Due to the reduced width of the edge portions 20 in the region of the opening 18, in which the tube 22 is introduced, can be with the weld 24 at the same time the entire frontal areas X both edge portions 20 close, without it being necessary, the housing 10 in its end face area S to be welded separately.
- An optimal fatigue strength of the housing 10 can be achieved in that the edge portions 20 in the region of the opening 18 with the central axis of the tube 22 form an angle ⁇ of about 30 °.
- FIG. 5 shows a second embodiment of the housing 30 according to the invention, which provides two separate flow paths 32 and is used for example as a housing of a middle silencer.
- the housing 30 consists of a (not shown) first half-shell and an overlying second half-shell 34, the longitudinal side edge portions 36, as already with respect to the FIGS. 1 to 3 described, are interconnected.
- the edge portions 36 in the housing 30 of the invention ( FIG. 5 ) in turn expire at the two openings 38 and their width is reduced to the openings 38 out.
- the angle that the edge portions 36 make with the center axis of a tube that can be inserted into the respective opening 38 is about 30 °. In this way, a significantly improved fatigue strength over the prior art is also achieved in the housing 30.

Abstract
