Definitions
- the paper webs are coated with a water-based coating slip, also known as a coating color.
- the coating colors consist of one or a mixture of different inorganic pigments and are bound with one or a mixture of organic binders. It is known to transfer these coating colors to the paper webs using so-called film presses. For this purpose, the coating color is applied on one or both sides to a rubber roller and then transferred from this roller or rollers to the paper web.
- the coating slip When the paper web in contact with the coating slip runs out, splitting occurs in the coating slip film. With this separation of a more or less viscous coating slip m itself, known rheological problems occur, which lead to so-called flow lines or m orange peel effect.
- the invention has the advantage that a more closed surface of the coating and therefore improved printability of the paper can be achieved with this method with an aqueous coating slip. Furthermore, the method according to the invention achieves a printability that was previously only possible with thicker stroke orders, so that printed products with a lower area-related mass can be produced as a result. Since these aqueous coating slips applied to film presses enable thinner strokes, the printed matter produced with them can advantageously also be disposed of in a more environmentally friendly manner.
- Fig. 1 a schematic representation of a single-sided film press with an electric
- Loading device 2: a schematic representation of a double-sided upstanding film press with an electrical charging device
- Fig. 3 a schematic representation of a double-sided film press with a corona generator for each side as a loading device.
- FIG. 1 of the drawing shows a schematic film press through which the paper web 8 runs and is provided on one side with an aqueous coating slip, the counter-roller 1 being positively ionized by an electrical charging device and thus becoming attractive to the anionic coating slip.
- the film press consists of two film press rolls, the lower one being the application roll 3 and the upper one being the counter roll 1, both of which are provided with a rubber covering.
- the rolls 1, 3 are driven in opposite directions and transport the paper web 8 in a predetermined direction between their contact surfaces.
- the application roller 3 of the film press is provided with a pre-coating device 4, through which the coating slip is applied to the application roller 3.
- the coating slip is, for example, applied evenly to the surface of the application roller 3 using a known doctor blade and taken along in the direction of rotation as film 6 on the roller 3 and applied to the lower side 2 of the paper web 8 passing through. Since the two rollers 1, 3 run against one another under a predetermined pressure, the aqueous coating slip is partially dewatered, so that a certain layer of the coating slip is applied to the lower side 2 of the paper web.
- the pre-coating device 4 which is to apply the coating composition in an optimally distributed manner, represents an electrode (cathode) 5 and is in electrical contact with the disperse coating composition, which can be regarded as an electrokinetic system.
- the negative pole of a voltage source 9 is connected to this electrode 5.
- a counter-rotating metal roller 7 is arranged on the counter roller 1 and acts as a second electrode (anode). acts and is connected to the positive pole of the DC voltage source 9.
- the rubber coating of the upper film press roller 1 consists of an electrically conductive rubber mixture, so that the paper 8 is charged with a positive electrical charge.
- the electrodes 5, 7 and the voltage source 9, as well as the electrically conductive roller coverings, represent an electrical charging device.
- a DC voltage source 9 is expediently selected for the electrical charging, which supplies a voltage of approximately 150 to 2,000 V. In other exemplary embodiments, higher voltages up to 10,000 V can also be used.
- FIG. 2 of the drawing schematically shows a film press for coating a paper web on both sides. This is essentially a film press as shown in FIG. 1
- FIG. 2 of the drawing shows two film press rollers 1, 3, both of which are designed as application rollers and through whose contact surfaces the paper web 8 runs continuously.
- the paper web 8 is wetted with coating slip on both sides by these two application rollers 1, 3.
- a pre-coating device 4, 4a is provided on each application roller 1, 3, by means of which the coating slip is applied uniformly to the surface of the application rollers 3, 1 using a known doctoring device, not shown. This creates a film 6, 6a of coating slip on the roller surfaces, which is partially applied to both sides 2, 2a of the paper web 8 passing through.
- the two primers are for better application of the coating slip to the two sides 2, 2a of the paper web 8 4, 4a connected to a DC voltage source 9.
- the pre-coating devices 4, 4a represent electrodes (cathodes) which are in electrical contact with the disperse coating composition, which can be regarded as an electrokinetic system.
- two guide rollers 7a, 7b are provided, through the contact surfaces of which the paper web 8 runs and is fed to the application rollers 1, 3.
- These guide rollers are made of an electrically conductive material or are coated with an electrically conductive surface material. At least these conductive roller surfaces are connected to the DC voltage source 9 and represent the opposite electrode (anode). In this way, the continuous paper web 8 is charged with a positive electrical charge.
- a film press is shown schematically, by means of which an application on both sides of the paper web 23 is achieved.
- two spray electrodes (corona generators) 13, 17 are provided as the electrical charging device, which bring about the opposite charging of the paper web 23 with respect to the coating slip.
- the paper web 23 is transported around a deflection roller 16 to a first guide roller 15.
- This guide roller 15 is connected to a compression spring 14, which guides the paper web 23 close to the corona generator 17 on the right. This will provide the right surface of the paper web with an electrical charge.
- the paper is ionized by oxidizing the upper atomic layer of the paper web 23.
- corona oxidation leads to hydrophilization and thus to faster water absorption. If the voltage level is sufficient, additional reactive groups can be formed on the fiber wall of the cellulose, which improve the streakiness.
- a left-hand corona generator 13 with a compression spring-provided 19 guide roller 18, which causes the left paper web surface to be oxidized.
- the paper web 23 passes through two oppositely driven film press rollers 20, 12.
- a further metering roller 11, 21 is arranged horizontally next to each of these film press rollers 20, 12 and is also driven counter to the respective film press roller 12, 20.
- the metering roller 11, 21 is provided with a structured surface, which serves for uniform wetting of the film press roller 12, 20 with the coating slip.
- the coating slip is entered into the upper nip 10, 22 of the respective film press roller 12, 20 and the associated metering roller 11, 21 and applied to the two paper side surfaces of the continuous paper web 23 via the surface of the film press roller 11, 21.
- the coating slip is applied in accordance with the method described in FIG. 1.
- the aqueous coating slips provide an electrokinetic
- each pigment has a zeta potential in this aqueous system.
- the coating slips are disperse because these pigments have electrokinetic repulsive forces.
- the invention was therefore based on the knowledge of using these electrokinetic forces when splitting the coating slip film and thus improving the transfer to paper 8, 23. Since all common coating colors have so far been anionic and should also be transferred to anionic paper, the electrokinetic repulsive forces had to be overcome to achieve a more homogeneous stroke application.
- the method according to the invention is therefore a transfer device by which ionogenicity is influenced in such a way that the electrokinetic repulsive forces between the paper 8, 23 and the pigments of the coating slip and thus the coating slip itself are eliminated.
- the coating slip can be charged cationically and the paper anionically or vice versa.
- the adhesion sion play a decisive role on both the paper surface and the dispensing roller 1.3.
- the pigments and binders torn off each other during this splitting process, because they carry the same zeta potential, tend to spray towards the cathode with anionic charge and towards the anode with cationic charge and thus reduce this fog.
- the coated paper web coming out of the nip is more homogeneous, which improves the printability after drying.
- the electrical charging or reloading of the coating slip and the paper 8, 23 thus made it possible to achieve a more homogeneous coat application and to minimize the spray mist. It is not the polarity of the charged elements such as the paper 8, 23 and the coating slip that is important, but only an opposite charge difference, which allows the electrokinetic forces to be effective.
- the invention can therefore also be implemented in other configurations insofar as an opposite charge can thereby be achieved, by means of which the electrokinetic attractive forces can be effective.
