- the paper webs are made endless in these unwinding stations so that continuous processing is possible. This making endless is done by gluing it to the next full wrap before one wrap is completely empty. The remaining web of the almost empty secondary reel is cut off with a toothed knock-off knife and instead the new web start of the large reel is pulled through the coating machine.
- This flying gluing process is mostly referred to as "flying splice" in the paper industry; see Voith p2827.
