Definitions
- the invention relates to a process for chlorine-free bleaching of cellulose with an ⁇ -cellulose content of more than 90%, in which more than 75% whiteness is achieved by means of oxygen in a one-step process.
- Oxygen bleaching is already known, the most important bleaching agents being hydrogen peroxide and sodium peroxide. Also of great importance is sodium perborate (NaBO3 ⁇ 4 H2O) which has so far not been used for industrial bleaching for economic reasons, but has been used as a component of automatic detergents.
- Peroxoacetic acid creates handling difficulties in the previous processes and was used to a very limited extent for bleaching naphthol-dyed textiles.
- Potassium monopersulfate has also been used for Bleach is proposed, as is sodium persulfate as an additive in peroxide bleaching.
- Molecular oxygen has also been used successfully as a bleaching agent in the MODO or in the SAPPI process, an oxygen treatment being carried out in the presence of NaOH at temperatures of about 100.degree.
- an oxygen treatment being carried out in the presence of NaOH at temperatures of about 100.degree.
- MgCO3 or complex Mg compounds are used.
- the previously known bleaching processes with oxygen and peroxo compounds require temperatures of at least 100 ° C. and a generally strongly alkaline environment, which is generally set using alkali metal hydroxides.
- the purpose of the stabilization is to prevent the radical decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and to render any catalysts which promote this decomposition ineffective.
- a stabilizer commonly used in peroxide bleaching is water glass, which is often used in combination with magnesium salts.
- Other stabilizers are magnesium salts together with dispersants or complexing agents.
- Other known stabilizers for hydrogen peroxide are phosphorus salts such as Na2H2P2O7.
- Activation is achieved by increasing the temperature, alkalinity and concentration. Activation starts and accelerates the bleaching process, but also favors the occurrence of undesirable side reactions, especially the breakdown of cellulose.
- the disproportionation of peroxo compounds takes place, for example, for H2O2 according to the following general reaction scheme: Two O atoms increase the oxidation number by +1; Two O atoms lower the oxidation number by -1.
- DE-A-22 19 505 discloses a chlorine-free multi-stage bleaching of cellulose, at least 3 bleaching stages being used, in which in the 1st stage with a peroxide, in the 2nd stage with a peracid and in the 3rd stage again is bleached with a peroxide. In addition to chlorine, this process also eliminates water glass. NaOH is preferably used as the base, the bleaching temperature at 20 ° to 140 ° C., preferably at 40 ° C. to the boiling temperature of the bleaching liquor.
- the bleaching with oxygen from the non-radical disproportionation which takes place in a short time, does not take place here.
- the bleaching times per step are approx. 4 hours at approx. 70 ° and approx. 20 minutes at 100 °.
- the object of the present invention was to find a bleaching process in which chlorine or hypochlorite is completely dispensed with and the oxygen-donating reaction essentially does not form any radicals and, at a low temperature and short reaction times, adequate bleaching of cellulose with more than 90% ⁇ -Cellulose content is made possible.
- this object is achieved by a process which is characterized in that bleaching is carried out with oxygen which has been obtained by disproportionation of peroxo compounds in the pH range from 6 to 13 and the bleaching time is between 15 and 150 minutes depending on the bleaching temperature from 35 ° C to 15 ° C.
- the method according to the invention is particularly suitable for bleaching these cotton linters because of the gentle bleaching. So far there has been a risk that products of side reactions from normal bleaching processes in hemodialysis get into the patient's blood and trigger hypersensitivity.
- a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention is that the pulp with more than 90% ⁇ -cellulose content consists of moistened cotton sinter.
- Preferred peroxo compounds are hydrogen peroxide and / or peroxomonosulfuric acid and / or peracetic acid and / or perborates, optionally in the form of their salts, each of which is only accessible in a narrow range of pH, temperature of the disproportionation which does not proceed via radicals, in the case of H2O2 and perborate catalysts are essential.
- Such catalysts are preferably metal oxides and / or metal hydroxides of a metal of the 2nd main group and / or the third, fourth, fifth or sixth sub-group of the periodic table.
- Alkali hydroxides do not lead to the desired disproportionation reaction with H2O2 at room temperature.
- calcium hydroxide has proven particularly useful as a catalyst in the process according to the invention, although the spinning specialists expected calcium hydroxide disorder in spinning.
- the weight ratio of hydrogen peroxide to metal oxide or metal hydroxide is preferably from 1: 1 to 25: 1.
- the disproportionation takes place in a very narrow pH range, which depends on the pK value of the peroxyacid.
- the ratio of the pH to the pK value of the peroxyacid is therefore preferably 0.6 to 1.3.
- the temperature range according to the invention is 15 to 35 ° C.
- the bleaching was carried out with an H2O2 concentration of 0.85% by weight and a Ca (OH) 2 concentration of 0.13% by weight.
- the reaction temperature was lowered to 20 ° C.
- the bleaching was ended and the reflectance of the linters after washing was determined to be 78%.

Description
Nr. Bleich-System Konzentration (Gew.%) Reaktions temp.
