Definitions

  • the invention relates to a device and a method for gluing book block spines, the device being equipped with a glue container, a motor-driven glue scoop roller, a glue application device which interacts at least occasionally with the scoop roller and with conveying means for transporting, positioning and holding book blocks to be glued.
  • Modern book production lines are composed of a large number of recently microprocessor-controlled machines, for example a back gluing machine for stitched book blocks, a hold-down press for pressing and holding down the book block spines, a flow trimmer, a heating section for evenly heating the glue film the book block spine, a station for rounding and pressing the book block spines, a gluing device in connection with a gauze station, a gluing device in connection with a station for applying backing material and tape, a pressing station, a hanging machine for hanging the book blocks in cover covers, a fold-in and a Press machine and a book stacker.
  • a back gluing machine for stitched book blocks
  • a hold-down press for pressing and holding down the book block spines
  • a flow trimmer for a heating section for evenly heating the glue film the book block spine
  • a station for rounding and pressing the book block spines a gluing device in connection with a gauze station
  • the invention relates to a device for gluing book block spines, which can be used both as a single device and integrated into a book production line, and with a method therefor.
  • a device for gluing book block spines in which the glue is taken from a storage container by a metal roller with a convex curved surface and transferred to an air-filled rubber hollow roller with a concave curved surface.
  • the pickup roller made of metal and the glue roller made of rubber are in constant contact with one another, and the book block spine to be glued is continuously guided over the glue roller touching it, a layer of glue being transferred from the glue roller to the back.
  • these hollow rollers have the disadvantage that the corners at the two ends of the book block spine, especially with thick book blocks, from the curved surface of the glue roller can not be detected and therefore either no or insufficient glue application.
  • the glue application is particularly special at the corners important because these are subject to the greatest stress in the finished book.
  • Gluing devices with cylindrical glue application rollers which roll on the spine of the book block not in the longitudinal but in the transverse direction. These devices have the disadvantage that unevenness in the back in the longitudinal direction, for example in the case of stitched blocks, are not glued due to the lack of adequate osculation of the rigid rollers.
  • the invention has for its object to improve a device and a method for gluing book block spines of the type mentioned in such a way that bumps, depressions, raised areas within the surface of the book block spines are glued just as safely and uniformly as the edges, corners and end faces of the Spine, especially with heavily pressed and / or thread-stitched blocks.
  • the elastically deformable cushion is preferably made of a porous, resilient material, for example made of foamed plastic (foam) such as foamed polyurethane, PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, silicone, epoxy, phenolic resin, urea-formaldehyde resin and the like.
  • foamed plastic foamed plastic
  • PVC polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, silicone, epoxy, phenolic resin, urea-formaldehyde resin and the like.
  • the foams mentioned are known and are commercially available in various degrees of hardness and porosity.
  • the glue application pad can also consist of textile materials, textile composites with a coagulated plastic coating, non-woven fiber fleece and similar elastically deformable materials.
  • the glue application cushion hollow and therefore flexible.
  • this embodiment of the invention is not intended to include a hollow roller as a glue application element
  • the cushion is elastically deformable, as a result of which the entire spine of the book block to be glued or its region to be glued is completely and uniformly glued, regardless of any surface unevenness, because the cuddling of the elastically deformable cushion compared to those previously used for this purpose used rollers or cloths is optimal.
  • the cushion usually has an active, glue transfer surface which is slightly larger than the surface of the back to be glued.
  • the pillow is not used up unrolled or otherwise moved horizontally in the longitudinal direction of the spine; the pillow only needs to be pressed onto the generally horizontal book block spine with an adjustable contact pressure in the vertical direction.
  • This embodiment of the invention is also not intended to include the use of an elastically deformable roller or hollow roller.
  • the cushion is exchangeably fastened on a support which can be raised and lowered in one plane, but at the same time can be swiveled in a plane perpendicular thereto.
  • the pillow can be pivoted particularly easily from a working position in which the layer of glue is transferred from the pillow to the back of the book block into a receiving position in which a layer of glue is taken up by a suitable feed device, for example a glue scoop roller, and onto the pillow for the purpose of later Tax is transferred to a book block spine.
  • the device according to the invention expediently has a cam mechanism for pivoting the glue pad from the working position over the book block spine to be glued to the position for receiving glue from e.g. B. a glue scoop.
  • the cam mechanism preferably consists of a pressure cylinder, a cam disc and a cam roller, the cam roller being mounted in a pivotable glue stamp.
  • a pressure cylinder is also attached to the glue stamp, which acts on a push rod to which the support carrying the pillow is attached, so that the pillow is pressed onto the book block spine to be glued by means of the pressure cylinder over the push rod and both in terms of time and with regard to the contact pressure in a manner known per se, for. B. can be controlled electronically.
  • FIG. 1 Further advantageous embodiments of the device according to the invention are characterized by a device for metering the amount of glue taken up by the scoop roller or to be released from the scoop roller to the cushion and by a device for adjusting the position of the glue cushion with respect to the position and dimensions of the book block spine.
  • the device according to the invention is preferably used as an integral part or component of a book production machine or system.
  • the problem underlying the invention is further achieved in a method for gluing book block spines, in which glue is transferred from the glue-bearing surface of a glue application element to the back surface of the book blocks to be glued, in that the glue application element is moved perpendicular to the back surface of the book blocks and that as Glue application element an elastically deformable cushion is used.
  • the glue layer has so far been transferred to the generally curved back of the book blocks to be glued with the aid of appropriately shaped rollers.
  • either the glue roller or the spine of the book was moved relative to one another, specifically in a plane or surface parallel to the back surface of the book blocks.
  • These known methods had the disadvantage that the corners at the two ends of the spine of the book block were not, or not properly, completely covered by the curved surface of the glue rollers used and therefore either received no glue or insufficient glue.
  • these disadvantages are overcome in a surprisingly simple manner in that the glue application element is moved not parallel but perpendicular to the back surface of the book blocks and an elastically deformable cushion is used as the glue application element.
  • an embodiment of the device according to the invention is used as the glue application element.
  • the device 10 for gluing the backs of book blocks 11 has a glue container 14, a glue scoop roller 22 which is partially immersed in the glue and is driven intermittently by the geared motor 23, as well as a transport chain 12 and other conveying means (not shown) for transporting, positioning and holding the book blocks to be glued 11. All functions of the device 10 are electronically controlled by a switching mechanism (not shown) and coordinated with one another in time.
  • the glue container 14 is divided into two chambers, namely an outer chamber 15, which serves as a storage container or also as a pre-melting container, and an inner chamber 17, from which the glue is removed by means of the scoop roller 22.
  • the two chambers 15, 17 are connected to one another by a siphon, wherein glue can flow from the outer storage chamber 15 into the inner chamber 17 if required by pulling the closure 16.
  • Thermostatic heating plates 18 keep glues to be processed warm at the desired temperature. This facility is not required for cold glues.
  • the glue container 14 is mounted in the pin 19.
  • a device for metering the amount of glue taken up by the scoop roller 22 consists of a scraper 21 and an adjusting screw 20 acting thereon, as a result of which the gap between scraper 21 and scoop roller 22 can be set as desired.
  • An element for applying the glue to the spine of the book block is an elastically deformable cushion 28 made of porous, resilient material, which is fastened on a support 31 which in turn is mounted on the free end of a push rod 32 which is in the direction of the double arrows I- II can be raised and lowered by means of the pressure cylinder 27.
  • the pressure cylinder 27 is fastened to a glue stamp 24 which can be pivoted about an axis 33 in a plane which is perpendicular to the plane in which the support 31 can be raised and lowered with the cushion 28.
  • a cam mechanism which consists of a pressure cylinder 25, a cam disk 26 and a cam roller 30, serves to pivot the glue pad 24, the cam roller 30 also being mounted in the glue pad 24 pivotably mounted about the axis 33.
  • the supply of the cushion 28 with glue is ensured with the aid of the cam mechanism as follows:
  • the glue stamp 24 is moved from the position 1 (POS. 1) above the book block spine by actuating the pneumatic cylinder 25, the cam disk 26 and the cam roller 30 to the glue receiving position ( POS. 2) swiveled.
  • the glue pad 28 is brought from the upper position I into the lower position II and thus brought up to the glue scoop roller 22, which is at that moment, pressed by the actuation of the pressure cylinder 27 against the surface of the scoop roller 22 by the surface the scoop roller 22 to lift or pick up the layer of glue.
  • the position of the glue pad 28 can be adjusted precisely with respect to the position and dimensions of the book block spine to be glued.
  • the entire device 10 can be moved on two guide rods 13, but can be locked in any position.
  • a towing device (not shown) the change to another format can also be carried out fully or semi-automatically.
