Definitions
- the invention relates to m-hydroxidiphenylamines containing ⁇ -phenylethyl radicals, their preparation by alkylation of m-oxidiphenylamines (3-hydroxidiphenylamine) with styrene and their use as antioxidants in mineral oils, in particular as antioxidants for liquid and pasty lubricants.
- Lubricants generally contain antioxidants in order to protect them against oxidative attack by atmospheric oxygen even at elevated temperatures and thus to extend the life of the lubricants. Without or without adequate protection by antioxidants, lubricants are broken down thermally and oxidatively with the formation of acid and a change in viscosity, whereby with the progressive aging of the lubricants the acids and oil-insoluble sludge deposits endanger the safe operation of the machines lubricated with them.
- the antioxidants act as radical scavengers, i.e. with the elimination of peroxides and radicals in the radical chain reaction of the oxidation and prevent the radical chain reaction from continuing or the start of new chain reactions (lit .: G. Scott, Atmospheric Oxidation and Antioxidants, Elesevier Publ. Corp. Amsterdam 1965).
- the new compounds of formula (I) are e.g. by alkylation of 3-hydoxidiphenylamine with styrene in a molar ratio of 1: 1 to 1: 4, preferably 1: 1 to 1: 2.
- reaction products of the formula I are expediently prepared by conventional alkylation methods, in accordance with the conditions of a Friedel-Crafts reaction.
- reaction temperatures between 100 ° C. and 200 ° C. are selected and conventional Friedel-Crafts catalysts are used to catalyze the reaction.
- catalysts which are suitable for the preparation are metal halides, for example AlCl 3 , FeCI 3 , ZnCl 2 , BF 3 and BF 3 complexes and Acids such as H 2 SO 4 , H 3 P0 4 , HF and aromatic sulfonic acids.
- P-Toluenesulfonic acid is preferably used.
- the amount of catalyst used is 2 to 10, preferably 3 to 5% by weight, based on aromatic amine.
- Test result The oxidation stability of lubricating oils is tested in a test based on DIN 41 352.
- the lubricating oil is aged twice for 6 hours while introducing air (15 l / h) at a temperature of 200 ° C. Then both the viscosity changes at 100 ° C and 40 ° C and the evaporation loss of the aged oil sample are determined.
- the aim is to have as few changes in viscosity as possible and as little evaporation loss as possible.
- Lubricating oil A is a synthetic lubricating oil consisting of an oil-soluble polyalkylene glycol ether obtainable by reacting hexyl glycol with approx. 100 mol propylene oxide.
- Lubricating oil B is a synthetic lubricating oil consisting of a water-soluble polyalkylene glycol ether which can be obtained by reacting butyl triglycol with approx. 30 mol ethylene oxide and approx. 20 mol propylene oxide.

Abstract
