Definitions
- the invention relates to a crucible for holding salt baths for the boronization of steels.
- Boring steel is a relatively new process, the importance of which has grown considerably in recent years.
- the steel parts are immersed, for example, in boron-releasing molten salts and annealed at 850 -950 ° C for a few hours.
- a hard, wear-resistant layer of iron boride (Fe 2 B) is formed by the diffusion of boron into the steel surface.
- the borating salt melts generally consist of a mixture of alkali and alkaline earth chlorides, alkali and alkaline earth fluorides, boron oxide and borates and a borating agent, usually boron carbide or boron powder. These melts are operated at 850 - 950 ° C.
- the fluorides and the borates in particular have a very destructive effect on crucibles made from normal steels.
- High-alloy corrosion-resistant steels such as the well-known VA steels, are also unusable as crucible materials. They are destroyed both by the attack of the borating agent and by the attack of the oxide-dissolving borates and fluorides.
- the titanium crucibles occasionally used in technology are not resistant to fluorides, other materials which are suitable in principle, such as noble metals, tantalum or graphite, cannot be used for reasons of cost and technical reasons.
- a steel with the composition 0.15% by weight of carbon, 2.0% by weight of silicon, 1.5% by weight of manganese, 20% by weight of chromium, 12% by weight of nickel, the rest of iron has proven particularly useful in practice .
- the materials according to the invention which have been selected from a large number of known steels, have excellent resistance to molten fluoride and borate-containing borating salts.
- the weight loss of a 350 g sheet made of steel with 0.15 carbon, 2% silicon, 1.5% manganese, 20% chromium and 12% nickel after 520 hours of treatment in a boron salt melt of 900 ° C is only 7 grams or 2% of the weight, while a similar mild steel sheet is completely destroyed by the melt with the same contact time.
- a boriding salt bath made of 52% by weight BaCl is placed 2 , 18% NaCl, 20% NaF and 10% B 4 C melted at 900 ° C and operated continuously over a period of 2500 hours. After this time, the molten salt is exhausted, the inside of the crucible is cleaned and inspected.
- the crucible wall is slightly roughened due to a relatively low, even corrosion attack without pitting and furrowing of the material.

Abstract
