Abstract

A sail with a tubular portion is pulled over a mast and/or a stay of a sailing vessel. The tubular portion is inflatable through a sail mouth opening at the fore leech thus forming an air envelope of the sail due to the relative wind effects. A plurality of telescoping contour sleeves formed of a lightweight, floating, elastic material are arranged in the tubular portion and sheath the mast and/or stay as well as selected portions of the rigging. The formation of an air envelope from a part of the sail and the use of rotatable streamlined contour sleeves inhibit complete heeling over of the sailing vessel and simplify the erecting of surfboards and sailboats. The telescoping arrangement of the contour sleeves permits an alteration of the sail surface and the sheathing of the rigging further decreases the wind resistance leading to an increased speed capability without need for greater inclination of the vessel. Thus the sails are better able to utilize the wind energy.

Description

The invention relates to the formation of an air envelope and molded parts for profiling sails according to the preamble of claim 1.

When building the usual sailing vehicles, every effort is made to improve the profile of the sails while at the same time reducing the resistance of the rigging, provided that the vehicle has to take advantage of the atmospheric wind from two sides.

"Das Segel" Jeremy Howard-Williams Deutsche Ausgabe Verlag Delius Klasing & Co. Bielefeld Berlin 1969).To meet these requirements, it is known to use a profiled mast with a mast profile which is extended aft beyond the usual streamlined shape of the fixed mast and which is usually rotatably arranged and can also be driven with a semi-rigid sail or a slat sail ("Segler Lexikon" Joachim Schult Verlag Klasing & CO GMBH, Bielefeld 1978 2nd edition page 311). The rigid sail parts have a streamlined shape with concave and unchangeable curvatures on both sides. Rigid sails have not been able to prevail, however, because they cannot be given the slight but important torsion that gives the sail the correct angle of attack at any height above the water, which corresponds to the wind gradient of the atmospheric wind at increasing heights above the water level (cf. "Das Segel" Jeremy Howard-Williams German Edition Verlag Delius Klasing & Co. Bielefeld Berlin 1969).

The idea of making the sail wing-shaped with a mast and a leading edge was already disclosed in DE-C-384 075 in 1922. It is very easy to sail with it; but in order to set such a sail in a moderate breeze, several people have to touch it, because the arrangement is too cumbersome - not to mention the difficulties when a gust sets in -.

According to DE-A-2356 426, the task of improving the profile while simultaneously reducing the resistance of the rigging of a ship cannot be regarded as solved, according to which several light metal sails can be telescopically inserted into the lower sail. The rigging not shown would be too complicated for this, and to reduce the sail area after removing the upper individual pieces, the last wing sail with the sections arranged therein - the mainsail - cannot be removed at all.

The profile masts also shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of FR-A-1 464 877 cannot be rotated, as a result of which the use of such a rig is greatly reduced. Since the wind gating edge according to FIG. 3 is not rigid, the wind will dent the canvas and thus show a poor stance. Head heaviness is present. A sail maker will hardly be able to incorporate an aerodynamic profile into such a sail.

A wind-propelled vehicle" (Australische Patentschrift No.46 552/79). Also known are the "rig for a sailing board" (German patent no. 1 914604) and "A wind-propelled vehicle" (Australian patent no.46 552/79). Both property rights essentially concern the attachment of the mast to a sailing board as well as the connection between the mast and two outwardly curved large trees. According to German Patent No. 1 914 604 it is also known to form the luff of a sail for a sail board as a seam into which the mast is inserted. However, it has been shown that a fundamental improvement in the profile of the sail has not been achieved as long as the mast remains the leading edge of the mainsail.

The invention has for its object to incorporate the mast or the stay in the sail and to create the profile that is favorable for sailing vehicles by means of slight profile shapes and filling up a profile envelope by the airstream. If the rigging of larger boats is changed, for example, by moving the mast sideways from midships as an expansion mast to the side walls, the best propulsion values are achieved, especially on clear sailing courses, by omitting any mast struts.

The solution to this problem is characterized in claim 1. The invention is characterized in that the wind resistance can be reduced to the seventh part by covering the mast and stay - possibly also the casing of round spreading masts - with light, movable and streamlined profile parts. In particular, an increase in speed is achieved without a previously more inclined position of the boat with the best wind utilization of the sails.

dar. The rigging shown in FIG. 1 consists of a mast 2, over which the profile sleeves 4, which are telescopically connected to one another with the base plates 5, are drawn. These are shown in detail in FIGS. 3 and 4. On the mast 2, the sail 1 is hoisted between the double boom 8 by pulling its tubular part over the mast and profile sleeves. This is facilitated by opening the zippers 18, 19, which are located in the tubular part of the sail and can be opened from the bottom up.

The battens 29 located in the batten pockets 30 extend through the tubular part of the sail to the extensions 28 of the base plates 5, in which they can be moved up and down - are fastened by means of bolts - as can be seen in particular in FIG. 2.

While FIGS. 1-4 show a new type of rigging in mast guidance, corresponding parts in stage guidance are shown in FIGS. 5 to 7. The profile sleeves 21 are round in this embodiment; 6, the base plates 22 can be oval or round as in FIG. They have individual bores for guiding stage 3, telescopic line 6 and downhaul 7. In any case, the profile sleeves at the height of the double boom 8 have the largest diameter. The base plates are glued to the sleeves, which are preferably made of foam. The pushing together takes place by means of the telescopic line 6, which has knots above and below each base plate. FIGS. 4 and 6 show individual sleeves 4 and 21, which have cutouts 31 in the direction of the leech, which guide the slat holder 28 of the base plates 5, 22 when the profile sleeves 4, 21 are pushed together.
