Definitions

  • the subject of the invention is a ski pole, transformable into an ice ax making it possible to increase the safety of skiers who practice so-called "alpine touring" skiing.
  • a ski pole comprising a tubular body constituted by two tubular elements assembled in a removable manner in the extension of one another the upper element having the length of an ice ax handle and ending at its end lower, by a tip comparable to the tip of an ice ax, said tip being housed inside the lower tubular element when the pole is used as a ski pole;
  • this stick comprises a folding rectilinear blade articulated from the top of the upper element, this blade playing the role of the pick of an ice ax, and a handle having a longitudinal slot whose length and depth are sufficient to allow this blade to s '' eclipse entirely in this slot which serves as a housing when the stick is used as a ski pole and not as an ice ax.
  • the stick consists of two tubular elements, preferably metallic, namely the lower one and the upper one 2, these two elements being assembled in the extension of one another by screwing , thanks to the cooperation of a thread 3, provided on the upper element 2, with a nut which, not visible in the drawing, is immobilized in the lower element 1.
  • the lower element 1 ends with a point 4, and near this point it is fitted with a washer 5.
  • the upper element 2 comprises, at its top, a main handle 6, and it is provided, substantially at mid-height, with an auxiliary handle 7; the first of the handles 6 is used in most cases, while the handle 7 is practically only used when the skier is crossing across sloping areas, and that of course in this case only the handle 7 is used, of the stick located on the upstream area of the slope.
  • the upper handle 6 which constitutes one of the original characteristics of the stick because it is arranged to allow the stick to be used either as a stick proper, or as an ice ax.
  • the upper tubular element 2 of the stick ends in a nozzle 8, the upper part of which forms a yoke 9, inside which is articulated, around an axis 10, the head 12 of a blade 13 constituting the peak of an ice ax; and the upper handle 6, which is advantageously made of molded plastic, presents over almost its entire height, from its lower end, a slot 14 intended to serve as a housing for the blade 13 of the ice ax, when the stick is used in stick, that is to say in the position illustrated in FIG. 1 and in the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 3.
  • Means must of course be provided to allow the blade 13 of the ice ax to remain imperatively either in the eclipsed position of FIG. 1, or in the working position of FIG. 2.
  • These means comprise a rod 15 which is mounted axially mobile inside the end piece 8 and the top of which cooperates with one or with the other of two notches 16 and 17 arranged in the head 12 of the blade 13, concentrically with its axis of articulation 10.
  • the rod 15 carries a stop ring 18, of the circlip type, on the underside of which bears a helical spring, which is housed in the lower part of the nozzle 8 and which bears fixed support on a ring 20 fixed for example by screwing in this nozzle.
  • the rod 15 is thus constantly subjected to a thrust from bottom to top, which forces it to remain in contact with the head 12 of the blade 13, and thus to penetrate either into the notch 16, or into the notch 17, which determine the two positions, respectively of non-use and use of the blade 13 of the ice ax.
  • a means is however of course provided for making it possible to imperatively move the rod 15 downward, in order to cause the blade 13 to pass from one position to the other.
  • This means consists of a finger 21 fixed transversely in the rod 15 and projecting outside the handle 6, after passing through longitudinal slots 22, 23 and 24, which are arranged in correspondence with each other, respectively in the tip 8, in the tubular element 2 of the stick and in the handle 6.
  • the blade 13 When the stick is used as an ice ax, the blade 13 therefore occupies the position illustrated in FIG. 2 and shown in phantom in FIG. 3; and it is important to note that the use of the ice ax stick is considerably facilitated by the fact that it is composed of the two tubular elements 1 and 2 which are removable, so that after disassembly the upper part of the stick appears truly in the form of an ice ax, as shown in Figure 2.
  • tubular element 2 is equipped with a point 25 identical to the tip of an ice ax, and that 'at its upper part the handle 6 comprises, coming from molding with it, a boss or lateral tab 26, which is located in the extension of the blade 13, but in the opposite direction relative to it, and which is profiled to play the role of the ice ax breakdown. It is moreover obvious that this part forming a purlin can be completed and reinforced by a small metal blade on which the plastic is overmolded.
  • the stick 28 ends at its upper end with a handle 29 which is split longitudinally to serve as a housing for two metal blades 30 and 31 comparable to the blade and to the breakdown of an ice ax.
  • These two blades are articulated around the same transverse axis 32 and are subjected to the action of at least one spring 33 tending to bring them into the extraction position.
  • a finger 34 articulated at 35 and subjected to the action of a spring 36 cooperates with notches 37 arranged in the heads of these blades to keep them immobile in the position of use.
  • Two other notches 38 arranged in these heads cooperate with the same finger 34 when the blades are folded back, that is to say returned to the handle.
  • the invention does not limit the use of the stick to the only two possibilities which have been mentioned, namely: use of the assembly as a stick, and use of the upper part as an ice ax. It is indeed obvious that thanks to the constitution of the stick in two elements assembled together in a removable manner, it is possible to provide for the mounting of various other accessories both on one and on the other of these two elements.
  • a shovel or a hammer can be mounted at the lower end of the upper element, or at the upper end of the lower element.
