ICE PICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1.9732.
Application filed December 31, 1921. Serial No.'526,090.
T0 or whom it may con/com Be it known that I, JAMES ALisoN MolVILLmMs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of'Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice Picks, of which the following isa specification. 1
My invention relates to ice picks and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an ice )ick oi simple construction in which a blac e is arranged for movement from an extended or :iully operatim position to an inoperative position, in which latter position the blade is sheathed in a handle.
A further object of my invention is to provide an ice pick of the character described having means for releasably holding a blade rigidly in extended or operative position and having other means for releasably holding the blade against movement from its sheathed or inoperative position.
A further object of my invention is to provide an ice pick of the character described which in its collapsed or folded position will take up but little space and may be carried about 111 a pocket of a garment, or the like.
Otherobjects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be pointed out more particularly in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of my improved ice pick, showing the blade in extended or fully operative position,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the ice pick,
Fig. 3 is a sectionv along the line 3 3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4: is a section along the line l-(i of Fi .2,and
%ig. 5 is a section along the line 5-5 oi:
Tn carrying out my invention, I provide a handle 1 which ma be made of any suitable material, preferab y wood. The handle 1 is reduced adjacent to one end thereof, as at 2, to provide a neck portion 3. The handle 1 has a longitudinally extending slot 4 formed therein, which slot extends radially into the neck portionof the handle to a point beyond the longitudinal axis of the handle and then inclined regularly from the neck portion 3 toward the other end oi": the handle to terminate short of the rear end of the lnindle, as indicated at 5.
A. head for the handle comprises a metal plate portion 6 of circular conformation abutting the end of the neck portion 3 and being provided with an integral collar portion 7 which closely embraces the neck portion 3. The head is made of metal or other wear-resisting material and is provided with a slot indicated at 8, which slot extends longitudinally oi. the collar portion 7 and radially into the disk portion 6 in registry with the slot 4 with the exception that the portion of the slot 8 formed in the disk portion 6 terminates short of the bottom wall of the slot 4 at the end of the neck portion 3.
An ice pick blade 9 is formed with a boss 10 at one end thereof, which boss is bored, as at 11 to receive pin 12 which is projected transversely through the collar portion 7 of the head, the neck portion 3 of the handle, and through the bore 11 of the blade 9, whereby the collar portion 7 is seouredon the handle 1 and the blade 9 is mounted to swing about the pin 12 from a position in which axially alined with the handle 1, as indicated by the full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, through the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 2, into the slot 4 of the handle 1.
A. latching cap 13 threadedly engages the head at 14t and is provided with a slot 15 adapted to register at times with the slot 8 of the head. An arcuate slot 15 is formed through the flange portion of the cap 13 and a pin 16 which is fast in the head or may be formed integrally therewith, engages the slot 15 to limit the rotation of the latching cap 13 about the axis of the head.
It is desirable that means he provided for releasably holding the blade 9 against move-- ment from its sheathed position in the slot 4;. To this end, a spring latch is disposed in the slot 4- and comprises a base portion 1"? secured to the bottom wall of the slot 4 by a screw 18 and an integral upstanding spring arm 19. The upper end of the spring arm 19 is substantially flush with the outer wall of the handle 1 and the spring arm is bowed inwardly intermediately as at 20, whereby the bemoved readily from its sheathed or inoperative position, a side wall of the slot d is cut away, as at 21, adjacent to the shallow end of the slot to permit of a finger being inserted beneath the free end of the blade 9. The blade 9 is of conventional form and tapers from the boss 10 to a point 24: at its free end.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof will be readily understood. The flange portion of the latching cap 13 is preferably knurled, as illustrated, to permit of convenient operation thereof. It will be obvious that when the latching cap 13 has been turned about the axis of the head until the slot 15 is in registry with the slot 8, that the blade 9 may be swung at will from the position indicated by the full lines in Fig. 2 until entirely disposed within the slot 1. The point of the blade will thus be protected against injury, and moreover, since the blade is sheathed in the handle, the ice pick as a whole will take up no more space than that required for the handle alone, and may be carried about in the pocket of a garment without danger of injury to the person or to the garment. When the blade 9 has been moved into the slot 4, it will be maintained therein on account of the engagement of the spring arm 20 therewith, as will be understood from the foregoing. lVhen it is desired to maintain the blade 9 in its extended or fully operativeposition, the latching cap 13 is turned about the axis of the head until the slot 15 is out of registry'with the slot 8 and in a direction to cause the cap 13 to be screwed tightly against the head. The latching cap 13 will thus be maintained in position to coact with the head in holding the blade 9 rigidly in axial alinement with the handle 1. T he latching cap 13 may of course be moved by hand at any time about the axis of the head within the limits determined by the guide slot 15 and by the engagement of the co-engaging threads of the head and of the cap.
I claim An ice pick comprising a handle provided with a slot extending longitudinally of the handle from the forward end thereof. a head secured on said handle at the forward end of the latter and being formed with a slot registering with the slot of the handle, a pointed blade pivotally supported within the slot of the handle to extend through the slot of the head when in one position with respect to the handle, a latching cap threadedly engaging the head for co-acting with the latter to releasably hold the blade against movement relatively to the head, said latching cap being formed with a slot therein adapted to register with the slot of the head when the latching cap is in a certain position with respect to the head and with an arcuate slot extending along the edge thereof, and a stop pin carried by said head in position to engage with said last named slot to limit the rotation of the latching cap about the axis of the head.
