Produktet fremstilles ved at en vandglasopløsning og syre, fortrinsvis en svovlsyre, hver for sig under opretholdelse af pH 3-10 og 50-95°C ledes til en 0,4-2%s natriumkloridopløsning, idet den dannede kiselsyresuspension efter tilsætningen reguleres til pH 7-4 og filtreres, hvorpå kiselsyren vaskes og under undgåelse af stærke forskydningskræfter straks føres til tørring og efter tørringen sigtes.
Produktet skal ikke formales og har en sådan kornstørrelse og -form at filtre ikke tilstoppes og sådan at kornene heller ikke aggregerer.
