Abstract
The surface area of finely divided silica produced according to Specification 745,822 is stabilized by heating the silica at a temperature above 50 DEG C., preferably 80-100 DEG C., for at least 30 minutes in aqueous dispersion. The "bound sodium" content of the silica may be reduced by treatment with acid, e.g. carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulphide or acetic, oxalic, sulphurous, phosphorous, phosphoric, sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acid, or a salt containing a cation which may be exchanged for sodium, e.g. ammonium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, strontium, barium, zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminium, iron and chromium salts. Treatment with acid is preferably carried out after the heat treatment. The sodium content may be reduced to below 1 per cent. The treated silica may be dried at 100-150 DEG C. or may be partially calcined. The product may contain 2-10 per cent both of "free" and "bound" water. It has an average particle size below 1 micron and a surface area of 25-200 sq. m./gm.
