Abstract

Finely divided silica is precipitated from an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate containing 10-150 gm./l. of SiO2, in the presence or absence of a non-reactive alkali metal salt, by the addition of an acidic substance in an amount sufficient to precipitate substantially all the silica in the solution but insufficient to produce a slurry having a pH below 5, the silicate concentration of the solution, the amount of non-reactive alkali metal salt present, the rate of addition of acidic substance, and the temperature of the solution being correlated to produce a silica having a surface area of 25-200 sq. m./gm. and an average particle size below 0.1 micron on the lines indicated in the Figs. (not shown). "Acidic substances" which may be used are carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hypochlorous acid, phosphoric acid sodium bi-carbonate, sodium bisulphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, and ammonium chloride. The alkali metal silicate solution may be used in a concentration of 10-100 gm./l. of SiO2 and may be sodium silicate having the composition Na2O (SiO2)x where x ranges from 1.65 to 4.0 and containing 7.6-30.45 gm./l. of Na2O. The time of acidification may be 5-2880 minutes and is preferably greater than 3 hours. The temperature of the solution may be 10-100 DEG C. The non-reactive alkali metal salt may be sodium chloride bromide, sulphate, nitrate or phosphate, or the corresponding potassium or lithium salts. 5-100 gm./l. of sodium chloride may be used. At a reaction temperature of 50-75 DEG C. and an SiO2 concentration of above 50 gm./l. the presence of alkali metal salt may be dispensed with. The alkali metal content of the precitation silica may be reduced by reslurrying and treating with acid. The silica is recovered and dried in known manner as at 100-150 DEG C. It may be partially calcined. The product may be incorporated in GR-S rubber. Specifications 294 681, 299,483 [both in Class 1(ii)], 561,750 and 745,890 are referred to.
