Description
Atnorphic silica is usually produced in such a way that inan water glass or another made from naturally occurring silicates soluble alkali silicate with an acid, such as. B. carbonic acid falls. This separates the free amorphous silicic acid is removed and the alkali goes, possibly as carbonic acid Alkali, in solution. It has now been shown that it is practically impossible to do that last traces of the alkali extremely retained on the silica particles by the ordinary means. like @ 1 "ash finite water or acids, remove. Also by “repeated careful washing of the leaves, even with warming and inechanical working through (stirring, etc.) is practically impossible to get under a residual alkali content of about 3 percent. But now this alkali content is for many purposes of industrial use of amorphous silica are disadvantageous and undesirable.
In-depth experiments have now become simple and technically smooth feasible process performed, these alkali residues completely or at least up to to remove completely harmless traces. It consists in treating the one treated with acid Mass feeds a metal salt in solution, which with that in the silicic acid by washing the alkali salt, which can no longer be removed, undergo a double reaction can, for example, if carbonic acid precipitated, a soluble salt of the alkaline earths, magnesium or aluminum etc.
An amount calculated on the remaining alkali content is stirred this salt, which is dissolved in water, with the silica to be cleaned, if necessary in the warmth, the dissolution going on completely. It arises in the assumed Fall an insoluble carbonate and a soluble alkali salt, e.g. P. Chiornatriurn or Chlorkalittui, the latter numnelir smooth by washing out or sweetening to be removed in filter presses or other appropriate apparatus. These Effect could not be foreseen, because when washing the silica with hydrochloric acid Water, as is usual, also forms alkali metal chloride, but this as stated, can only be washed out very imperfectly: t) this light and perfect one Removability of the alkali salt formed by double conversion is therefore represents a new, hitherto unknown and expedient effect that the subject of the present invention.
If now, in the examples given, instead of the alkali carbonate as a result of the double conversion, an equivalent amount of the carbonate of that used Base occurs, this disadvantage can gladly be accepted, cla such Admixtures for most purposes, including amorphous silica in industry is used, completely harmless, e.g. T. are even desirable.
