Abstract
Concentrated inorganic-oxide aquasols containing dispersed particles of a large size are obtained by passing a mixture of an alkaline reacting inorganic-oxide aquasol containing alkali-metal ions and up to 4 per cent by weight of the same inorganic oxide in ionic form or in the form of particles having an average size below 40 millimicrons, through a cation-exchange material until the pH of the effluent is slightly below neutral, alkalising the effluent by the addition of an alkaline compound giving rise to alkali-metal ammonium or quaternary ammonium ions, heating to above 100 DEG C. and then recycling a portion of the effluent together with alkali-metal ions and up to 4 per cent by weight of the same inorganic oxide in ionic or the above small dimensional particle form. The process is particularly applicable to the production of silica aquasols but may also be used for producing sols of tungstic acid, vanadium oxide or molybdenum oxide. Specified alkaline compounds are ammonia, sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, potassium silicate, benzyl triethyl ammonium hydroxide and tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide. Specified cation-exchangers are sulphonated or carboxylated synthetic resins of the phenolformaldehyde, tannin-formaldehyde or polydivinyl benzene type, or sulphonated brown coal or peat.
