Abstract

898,614. Coated paper. COLUMBIASOUTHERN CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 13, 1959 [Feb. 17, 1958], No. 5048/59. Class 96. Paper is coated with a size composition containing a flocculated siliceous material with an ultimate particle size less than 0.3Á, at least 55% being in the form of floes less than 7Á in diameter. The siliceous material may be silica precipitated from sodium silicate by carbon dioxide, filtered, washed, dried and ground. Alternatively, it may be calcium silicate obtained by adding calcium chloride to sodium silicate, filtering, washing, drying and grinding. The calcium silicate may be wholly or partially reacted with an aluminium salt to give aluminium silicate or calcium aluminium silicate. The siliceous material so made is mixed with water to form a slurry and added to a starch dispersion.
